A Haarlem travel poster taken from the water's edge on the Spaarne: the tall wooden windmill standing on the right bank with its sails turned into the wind, a row of brick quay houses stepping away behind it, and the dark spire of the old church rising above the roofs on the far left.
About the artwork
Half the sheet is river. The water is drawn in short horizontal strokes of steel blue and slate, lighter where the breeze catches it and darker in the lee of the quay, and a brick towpath comes in at the bottom-left corner to give the viewer a place to stand. The right bank carries the windmill: a dark timber octagon on a brick base, boarded and shingled, with the lattice sails drawn spar by spar against the clouds. Along the far quay the houses run in warm red brick and cream, their stepped and bell gables each drawn to a different profile, with trees breaking the line between them. Behind everything the church spire is a slim dark needle, flanked by two smaller turrets. The sky is a bank of white cumulus over pale blue, taking up the top third. Title in wide-tracked uppercase with Netherlands beneath. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- A working windmill up close. Drawn large on the bank rather than small on a horizon, with every sail spar in place.
- Dutch sky and Dutch water. Cumulus over a wide river, which is half the character of the country.
- Gables worth reading. Stepped and bell fronts along the quay, no two the same.
- Made to order. Printed after you buy, colour-managed, never warehoused.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4–A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
Cool blues with warm brick keep this print calm, which suits a bedroom, a study or a landing. It reads well on white, pale grey and soft blue walls, and beside oak, rattan and pewter. Natural oak frames pick up the timber of the mill; black frames sharpen the spire and the water. It makes an obvious pair with the Zaanse Schans or Gouda prints if you want the Netherlands on one wall.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? Above a console or desk, 12" x 18" or 16" x 24". Above a sofa, bed or mantel, go 24" x 36" or larger so the print holds the wall.
Does it come framed? Paper prints ship unframed and fit standard frames. Choose a framed canvas if you would rather skip the framing shop.
Which way is the view looking? Along the Spaarne from the towpath, with the windmill on the near bank and the church spire away over the rooftops.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Three ways to print it.
Same artwork, same colour-managed printing — the material decides how it hangs and how much wall it holds.

Thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks.
- The most affordable option, and the one to pick if you already own a frame.
- Reads slightly softer than canvas.
- Ships rolled in a rigid tube.
Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.
- No glass, so no glare — good for bright rooms.
- Holds a touch more contrast than paper.
- Boxed with corner guards.
Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
- White and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
- The usual choice for a feature wall — nothing to assemble.
