A Gulf Islands National Park poster looking down a Salish Sea channel: three orcas travelling through blue water between low forested islands, pale rock along the near shore, and red-barked arbutus leaning in from both edges of the frame.
About the artwork
The arbutus do the framing. Their trunks are drawn in a warm rust-orange that appears nowhere else in the picture, curving in from the left and right so the channel is seen through a gap between them — a device that gives the flat water real depth. The islands beyond are layered in three or four receding greens, each one a little bluer than the last. In the middle the orcas are small on purpose: two adults and a third animal, black-and-white, with the wake behind them the only broken water on the sheet.
The sheet is the Canadian park service layout used across this series, with the type in deep red picked from the arbutus bark: cream border, small dark capitals along the top reading BRITISH COLUMBIA · 48.66° N, 123.40° W · EST 2003, and GULF ISLANDS at the foot over NATIONAL PARK, with the Parks Canada wordmark and beaver roundel below. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- Arbutus bark as the colour key. The only broadleaf evergreen native to Canada, and the one tree that makes this coast instantly recognisable.
- Orcas at true scale. Drawn small in a wide channel rather than leaping in the foreground, which is how you actually see them from the shore.
- A quiet blue that suits bedrooms. No high-contrast snow or rock — the whole sheet sits in a narrow band of blue, green and rust.
- Hangs as a set. Every print in the Canada parks series shares the same border, banner and typographic foot, so a row of them lines up exactly.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4-A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
This is one of the softest prints in the series, so it can go somewhere a mountain poster would be too loud — a bedroom, a landing, a small study. Warm white and pale grey both work; a deeper blue-green wall pushes the arbutus forward. Natural oak or walnut picks up the rust bark, and it hangs comfortably beside Pacific Rim and Gwaii Haanas for a British Columbia wall.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? Above a console or desk, 12" x 18" or 16" x 24". Above a sofa, bed or mantel, go 24" x 36" or larger so the print holds the wall.
Does it come framed? Paper and matte canvas ship unframed and fit standard frames. The framed canvas option arrives in a solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
What are the orange trees? Arbutus — the peeling red-barked evergreen that grows along this coast. The banner along the top gives the reserve's coordinates and its founding year, 2003.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

- Reads slightly softer than canvas.

Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.
- No glass, so no glare — good for bright rooms.
- Holds a touch more contrast than paper.
- Boxed with corner guards.
Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
- White and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
