A Griffith Observatory poster drawn from the trail below, looking up the ridge in late afternoon light. The white observatory sits on the shoulder of the hill on the right, its big central dome and two smaller flanking domes weathered to copper green. Below and behind it the whole Los Angeles basin runs flat to a hazy horizon, and a dirt path curves up through dry brush in the foreground.
About the artwork
Layered flat shapes with fine directional hatching in the grass and rock, the look of a national park screen print. The palette splits cleanly: hot ochre, apricot and burnt sienna across the sunlit hillside, deep blue-violet in every shadow, dark olive scrub and one full oak tree, then a cool blue-grey wash over the distant city and a clear teal sky above. The observatory is drawn small but exact, with the arched entrance bay, the balustrade terrace and the thin lawn ledge in front. Typography sits in the sky in thin white capitals: LOS ANGELES, with CALIFORNIA smaller below. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- The hike, not the parking lot — the foreground trail is half the picture, which is how most people actually reach it.
- Warm and cool held apart — orange hillside against violet shadow, with the city cooled right down so the domes stay the focal point.
- Serious depth — brush, ridge, observatory, basin, horizon: five clear planes stacked in one vertical.
- Los Angeles without the cliché — no palm-lined boulevard, no sign, just the hills the city sits under.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4-A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
Ochre and sienna are easy company for cream, oatmeal and terracotta walls, and the violet shadows keep it from going flat against warm paint. Natural oak or espresso frames stay inside the palette, as the beige-wall console shot above shows. Good in a home office or a reading corner, and it pairs well with desert and canyon prints.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? The observatory is small in the composition, so 16" x 24" is the sensible minimum and 24" x 36" is better if the wall allows it.
Does it come framed? Paper and matte canvas ship unframed. The framed canvas option arrives in a solid wood floating frame, wired and ready to hang.
What does the poster say? The printed text is LOS ANGELES with CALIFORNIA beneath it. The observatory is not named on the artwork.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Three ways to print it.
Same artwork, same colour-managed printing — the material decides how it hangs and how much wall it holds.

Thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks.

- Reads slightly softer than canvas.
- Ships rolled in a rigid tube.
Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.
- No glass, so no glare — good for bright rooms.
- Holds a touch more contrast than paper.
- Boxed with corner guards.
Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
- White and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
