A Gouda travel poster taken from the cobbles of the market square in the late afternoon: red and white striped awnings running down one side, wheels of cheese stacked on the stones beside them, and the pale Gothic town hall standing free in the middle of the square with a tall stepped gable leaning over the stalls.
About the artwork
The whole picture is built on the diagonal of the paving, which runs out of the bottom-left corner and carries the eye up into the market. The cobbles are drawn stone by stone in warm grey and cream, with the shadows of the awnings and the lamppost laid across them in cool blue-violet. On the right the stepped gable rises nearly the full height of the sheet: red brick banded with cream stone, scarlet-framed windows set into the wall, a steep pantile roof above. In the middle distance the town hall sits pale against the sky, turrets, dormers and red shutters each picked out. Between the two the market is a run of striped canopies over crates of flowers and produce, and along the front the cheese is drawn as fat yellow rounds with waxed rinds. Title in wide-tracked uppercase with Netherlands beneath. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- The cheese wheels in front. Drawn large on the stones, they name the town before you read the word.
- Two kinds of Dutch brick. The free-standing Gothic town hall and the stepped gable beside it, both drawn in full.
- Red, cream and duck-egg blue. Warm awnings against a cool sky, which is what keeps the square from flattening out.
- Made to order. Printed after you buy, colour-managed, never warehoused.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4–A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
The reds here are warm rather than sharp, so the print settles easily into a kitchen, a dining room or a hallway. Cream, clay and soft grey-green walls suit it, and it sits well above oak, painted wood and enamelware. A natural oak frame follows the brick and the cheese; a black frame tightens the whites of the town hall instead. It hangs well beside the Haarlem or Zaanse Schans prints if you want a small Dutch group on one wall.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? Above a console or desk, 12" x 18" or 16" x 24". Above a sofa, bed or mantel, go 24" x 36" or larger so the print holds the wall.
Does it come framed? Paper prints ship unframed and fit standard frames. Choose a framed canvas if you would rather skip the framing shop.
What is stacked along the front of the square? Wheels of cheese on the market stones, drawn as waxed yellow rounds beside the flower and produce stalls.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Materials
Three ways to print it.
Same artwork, same colour-managed printing — the material decides how it hangs and how much wall it holds.
Fine art paper
Thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks.
- The most affordable option, and the one to pick if you already own a frame.
- Reads slightly softer than canvas.
- Ships rolled in a rigid tube.
Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.
- No glass, so no glare — good for bright rooms.
- Holds a touch more contrast than paper.
- Boxed with corner guards.
Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
- White and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
- The usual choice for a feature wall — nothing to assemble.
