An etretat cliffs poster from the grass on the headland: white chalk cliffs dropping straight into teal water, the great natural arch reaching out from the point, the free-standing needle beyond it, and seed heads and wildflowers catching the light in the foreground.
About the artwork
Three distinct handlings in one picture, and the contrast between them is the whole design. The foreground grass is drawn loosely and warmly — sap green, straw, rust, with silvery thistle heads and small mauve flowers picked out individually, and orange lichen on the rock edge. The cliffs are the opposite: hard, cool, almost architectural, built from flat facets of white, pale grey and blue-shadow with fine horizontal flint lines ruled across them. Between the two the sea does the heavy lifting — deep teal in the shade of the cliff, brighter aquamarine where the light hits, with white surf drawn as long curling ribbons along the base of the rock and around the arch. The arch itself is left as a clean dark opening, which is what your eye keeps returning to. Title in wide-tracked uppercase with France beneath. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- The arch and the needle. The two shapes that make this coast unmistakable, both in frame.
- Soft foreground, hard cliff. Two ways of drawing in one print, and the contrast gives it depth.
- White chalk on teal. A cool, clean pairing with just enough warm grass to hold it.
- Made to order. Printed after you buy, colour-managed, never warehoused.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4–A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
Fresh and open — good in a bedroom, bathroom or a hallway that needs a window. It works against white, chalk and pale sage walls and beside linen, ceramic and bleached wood. Pale oak and white frames keep the chalk bright; black frames pull out the teal. It hangs well beside the Cliffs of Moher and Old Man of Storr prints as a coastal group.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? Above a console or desk, 12" x 18" or 16" x 24". Above a sofa, bed or mantel, go 24" x 36" or larger so the print holds the wall.
Does it come framed? Paper prints ship unframed and fit standard frames. Choose a framed canvas if you would rather skip the framing shop.
What is the pillar in the sea? The free-standing chalk needle that sits just beyond the arch on the Normandy coast at Etretat, seen here from the clifftop path.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.
