An edinburgh castle poster seen from the gardens below: the fortress strung along the top of its dark volcanic crag, a wall of cumulus stacked behind it, and mown grass running flat to the bottom edge.
About the artwork
The drama is in the cloud. It rises behind the castle in scalloped layers of cream, pale grey and blue-shadow, taking up more than a third of the sheet, with thin cirrus streaked across a deep blue sky above. Against it the castle reads almost as a silhouette until you look closer — then the gun ports, the rank of barrack windows, the parapets and the drum-shaped battery with its curved wall all separate out in warm grey stone. The crag beneath is the darkest passage in the print: near-black rock cut into flat faceted planes, with emerald and olive grass caught in the gullies and a scatter of small trees clinging to the ledges. The foreground is the opposite, a broad calm sweep of lawn in two flat greens with a border of pink and white blossom, and away at the lower left the city fades to pale blue rooftops and one spire. Title in wide-tracked uppercase reading EDINBURGH, with Scotland beneath. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- Cloud as the second subject. The build of cumulus is drawn with as much care as the stone.
- The crag reads as rock. Faceted dark planes rather than a flat mass, so the hill has real weight.
- Green and blue, nothing else loud. It settles into a room instead of competing with it.
- Made to order. Printed after you buy, colour-managed, never warehoused.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4–A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
Cool, green and restful — a good fit for a bedroom, hallway or a study with tweed and dark wood. It sits well on white, stone and muted green-grey walls, beside oak, wool and pewter. A black frame follows the rock and suits the graphic edges; natural oak keeps it softer and lifts the lawn. It hangs comfortably alongside the Oxford print, or the Dark Hedges if you want two moody British landscapes together.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? Above a console or desk, 12" x 18" or 16" x 24". Above a sofa, bed or mantel, go 24" x 36" or larger so the print holds the wall.
Does it come framed? Paper prints ship unframed and fit standard frames. Choose a framed canvas if you would rather skip the framing shop.
Is the city in this print? Only just — a strip of pale rooftops at the lower left. The subject here is the castle and its rock, and there is a separate Edinburgh print in the store for the city as a whole.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

- Reads slightly softer than canvas.

Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.
- No glass, so no glare — good for bright rooms.
- Holds a touch more contrast than paper.
- Boxed with corner guards.
Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
- White and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
