A Durham travel poster looking up the wooded gorge of the River Wear: the cathedral standing on its sandstone bluff with two squared western towers and a taller one behind, steep banks of oak on both sides, and the river running out towards you in flat teal.
About the artwork
The cathedral is set high and small, which is the right decision — it makes the gorge the subject and the building the reward. It is drawn in warm sandstone, the western towers squared off and the central one carrying pinnacles, with buttresses stepping down the east end and a large traceried window facing the river. Below it the bluff shows as bare rock in pink and grey, and then the wooded banks take over: five or six layered flat greens, with individual trees at the bottom corners drawn trunk and branch so the leaf mass has somewhere to start. Red pantile roofs cluster on the right bank and a pale terrace shows through the leaves. The water is the surprise — teal-green, crossed by hundreds of short white and gold dashes for the ripples, with the far bank laid into it as a soft reflection. The sky is pale eau-de-nil rather than blue. Title in wide-tracked uppercase with England beneath. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- The gorge, not just the cathedral. Two thirds of the print is river and woodland, which is what the city actually looks like.
- Ripples drawn dash by dash. The water reads as moving from across the room and as handwork up close.
- A pale green sky. An unusual choice that keeps the whole print cool and low-contrast.
- Made to order. Printed after you buy, colour-managed, never warehoused.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4–A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
Green-heavy and quiet, so it suits a study, a landing or a bedroom rather than a bright kitchen. It sits well on sage, clay and warm white walls, and next to dark wood, leather and shelves of books. A walnut frame pulls the sandstone forward and agrees with the foliage; espresso works too, while a cold black frame flattens it, so keep the frame warm. It pairs naturally with the Whitby print as a north-east England set.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? Above a console or desk, 12" x 18" or 16" x 24". Above a sofa, bed or mantel, go 24" x 36" or larger so the print holds the wall.
Does it come framed? Paper prints ship unframed and fit standard frames. Choose a framed canvas if you would rather skip the framing shop.
Where is the view taken from? From the wooded bank downstream, looking back up the loop of the River Wear to the cathedral on its bluff, with the houses of the bank on the right.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
