A Custer State Park illustrated print looking across the meadow to the granite needles. A bison herd grazes in waist-high golden grass in the lower third, a two-lane road curls in from the right edge, ponderosa pine covers the slopes, and a tall pale grey spire splits the sky above it all. Blue Black Hills ridges sit far back on the left.
About the artwork
The rock is the centre of the drawing and it is worked hard: fine vertical fracture lines, warm rust streaks running down the granite, and cool shadow in every cleft, so the spire has weight instead of being a grey silhouette. The pines are stacked in layered greens from near black to sage, the grass is laid in gold, wheat and olive strokes, and each bison is a small shaped mass with its own highlight. Deep blue sky at the top fades to pale near the horizon, with one heavy cumulus stack on the left. The name is set at the base: CUSTER STATE PARK in white caps, SOUTH DAKOTA spaced underneath. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- Wildlife inside a landscape. The herd is painted at true scale against the spires, which is what makes the rock feel enormous.
- Four depths in one sheet. Grass, forest, granite, distant blue hills, each held apart by colour temperature.
- Autumn gold and pine green. A warm-cool pairing that sits well in rooms with wood and leather.
- A road trip memory. Anyone who drove the wildlife loop and got stuck behind the herd knows this view.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4-A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
Pine green and dry gold are a natural fit for a study or a den with tan leather, walnut or cognac tones. On a warm white wall the granite reads almost silver. The walnut frame and herringbone floor scene in the photographs above shows the pairing well. Avoid a cool grey wall, which flattens the gold in the meadow.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? The bison are small in the frame, so go 18" x 24" or larger if you want them to read from across the room. 12" x 18" works close up in a hallway.
Does it come framed? Paper ships rolled and unframed. Matte canvas arrives stretched and ready to hang. Framed canvas comes in a solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
What does the poster say? CUSTER STATE PARK across the bottom, with SOUTH DAKOTA in spaced capitals beneath it.
Is there another Custer design in this shop? Yes. We also sell a flat vector poster of the Needles Highway in this same park: simplified shapes, even colour, no shading, name at the top, and the tunnel rather than the herd as its subject. This painted version puts the bison meadow first and prints the name along the bottom.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks.
- The most affordable option, and the one to pick if you already own a frame.
- Reads slightly softer than canvas.
- Ships rolled in a rigid tube.
Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.
- No glass, so no glare — good for bright rooms.
- Holds a touch more contrast than paper.
- Boxed with corner guards.
Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
