A Craters of the Moon Idaho poster set at last light, when the Milky Way is already out over the lava. A rust-red cinder path threads between broken blocks of vesicular basalt, silver-grey buckwheat and rabbitbrush grow in the cracks, and cinder cones sit low along the horizon with a thin band of gold still hanging behind them on the Snake River Plain.
About the artwork
Painterly illustration with unusually dense foreground detail — every lava block is drawn separately, pitted with gas holes and lit from one side, so the rubble field reads as texture rather than pattern. The palette runs cocoa brown, umber and iron rust through the lava, pale sage and frost blue in the shrubs, then a rich teal-to-navy sky sown with hundreds of small stars and a soft granular Milky Way band spilling down the centre. A narrow apricot sunset strip separates sky from land. In white capitals near the base: CRATERS OF THE MOON, with IDAHO below. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- Night sky and ground given equal weight — half stars, half lava, which is exactly the reason people camp here.
- A genuinely dark-sky place — the monument is certified as an International Dark Sky Park, and the print earns its stars.
- Texture you can look into — the pitted basalt foreground rewards standing close, unusual in a travel print.
- Cool palette, warm accent — teal and navy held together by the rust cinder path running through the middle.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4-A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
This is a dark print, so it needs a light wall to breathe — warm white, chalk or a pale greige lets the star field read properly. A black or espresso frame sinks into the sky and makes the rust path the focus; natural oak, as in the room photographs above, warms the brown lava. It belongs in a bedroom or a quiet reading corner rather than a bright hallway, and it sits well with charcoal linen and dark wood.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? The fine star field and the pitted lava both benefit from size, so 24" x 36" or 30" x 40" is where this one is strongest. Below 16" x 24" the Milky Way texture starts to compress.
Does it come framed? Paper prints and matte canvas ship unframed. Framed canvas is a separate material option with a solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
Is this a national park? Craters of the Moon is a National Monument and Preserve, not a national park. It sits on the Snake River Plain between Arco and Carey in south-central Idaho, on lava flows that are only a couple of thousand years old in places.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Materials
Three ways to print it.
Same artwork, same colour-managed printing — the material decides how it hangs and how much wall it holds.
Fine art paper
Thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks.
- The most affordable option, and the one to pick if you already own a frame.
- Reads slightly softer than canvas.
- Ships rolled in a rigid tube.
Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.
- No glass, so no glare — good for bright rooms.
- Holds a touch more contrast than paper.
- Boxed with corner guards.
Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
- White and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
- The usual choice for a feature wall — nothing to assemble.
