A Coal Mine Canyon Arizona poster that looks out over a wide desert amphitheatre south of Tuba City, where a pale band of caprock sits on deeply fluted rust-orange cliffs. Ridges recede in cooling blues toward the horizon, tall cumulus stacks build over the mesa rim, and sage-green shrubs scatter across the ochre valley floor below.
About the artwork
This is a painterly illustration rather than a flat vector graphic. The cliff faces are modelled with fine vertical shading so each column and gully reads separately, and the palette runs from cream and bone caprock through terracotta, rust and burnt sienna to olive and sage scrub. A deep teal sky gradient sits above white cumulus with grey undersides, and distant plateaus fade to slate blue. A dark rock ledge and juniper anchor the lower left corner. Set in white capitals across the base of the print: COAL MINE CANYON, with ARIZONA beneath it. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- A quieter corner of Arizona — not the canyon everyone photographs, which is exactly why it reads as personal.
- Banded geology you can actually read — the white caprock, red columns and green valley floor stack into three clear horizontal registers.
- Weather in the composition — the cumulus build takes up the top third, so the print carries real depth rather than flat sky.
- Desert palette that warms a room — rust, ochre and sage, with just enough teal to keep it from going muddy.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4-A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
The rust and ochre run warm, so this one settles best against off-white, clay or a soft putty wall rather than cool grey. Natural oak framing picks up the sandstone tones, as in the room photographs above; black framing sharpens the contrast between the white caprock and the red cliff. It sits well over leather, linen or wool in undyed tones, and the teal sky gives you a colour to echo in a cushion or ceramic.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? For a wall above a sofa or bed, 24" x 36" or 30" x 40" holds the scale of the canyon. In a hallway or beside a desk, 12" x 18" or 16" x 24" is enough to read the banding clearly.
Does it come framed? Paper prints and matte canvas ship unframed. Framed canvas is a separate material option with a solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
Where is Coal Mine Canyon? It sits on the Arizona high desert near Tuba City, on land held by the Navajo Nation and bordering Hopi land. It is a place people live near and care for, not a roadside attraction: visiting requires permission and a permit arranged through the local Navajo chapter, and much of it is best appreciated from a distance or through work like this print.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.
