A City of Rocks New Mexico poster taken from among the boulders: one enormous rounded monolith rearing up on the left, a second cluster of standing blocks out on the plain in the middle distance with grass lanes running between them, low desert scrub in the foreground, and the blue Chihuahuan ranges stretched along the horizon under stacked cumulus.
About the artwork
Painted in a dense illustrative style with hard silhouettes and soft internal shading, so the volcanic tuff reads as weathered and pitted rather than flat. The palette runs warm brown, tan and dusty pink across the rock faces, deep umber in the shaded flanks, sage and olive in the scrub, straw yellow in the grassland, and cool cornflower to grey-blue in the distant mountains. The sky is layered blue with cream and shadowed cloud banks. Type sits at the base: CITY OF ROCKS in white capitals, STATE PARK • NEW MEXICO in a smaller line under it. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- The name makes sense on sight — the blocks stand in rows with grassy lanes between them, which is exactly why it is called a city.
- Volcanic, not sandstone — these are welded ash monoliths, rounder and softer-edged than the layered rock of most Southwest prints.
- Room-sized contrast — warm brown rock against a cool blue sky and blue distance, which reads clearly from across a space.
- Southern New Mexico — the Chihuahuan desert country near Silver City, a different part of the state from the northern pueblos and mesas.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4-A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
Tan, umber and sage sit well on cream, sand or warm greige walls, and the print is a natural partner for leather, terracotta and woven wool. Natural oak framing keeps the sand tones forward; espresso emphasises the shaded rock. It anchors a living room wall above a cream sofa, as in the plant-flanked sofa photograph above, and works equally well over a low console.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? The foreground monolith carries even at 12" x 18", but the far cluster and the ranges need room — 24" x 36" or larger gives the whole plain space to open out.
Does it come framed? Paper and matte canvas ship unframed. The framed canvas option arrives in a solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural, wired and ready to hang.
What does the poster say? CITY OF ROCKS in large white capitals, with STATE PARK • NEW MEXICO set smaller beneath it.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
