A Calaveras Big Trees poster standing at the foot of a giant sequoia in a Sierra Nevada grove. The trunk fills the right-hand third of the sheet, flaring out at the base and running clean off the top edge without showing its crown. A dirt trail curves past it, and two walkers on that trail are barely taller than the bark ridges — which is the whole point.
About the artwork
Painted in worked detail rather than flat vector shapes. The sequoia bark is drawn in long vertical fibrous ridges, deep-shadowed between them, with old fire scars and healed knots picked out on the face. Colour carries the contrast: cinnamon, rust and burnt orange in the sequoia bark against a deep petrol-teal sky, with cream and grey cumulus banked behind. Around them, a mixed conifer forest in six or seven greens — blue-green fir spires in the middle distance, yellow-green sunlit foliage on the sequoia crowns, and dark ferns and dogwood filling the foreground. The trail is a pale sand curve, the only straight-ish line in the composition. Lettering runs across the lower band in white condensed capitals: CALAVERAS BIG TREES, with STATE PARK and CALIFORNIA beneath. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- Scale you can actually read — two tiny figures on the trail do more than any measurement caption.
- The crown is cut off deliberately — the tree runs out of the frame, so the print feels like standing under it rather than looking at it.
- Bark as texture — the fibrous cinnamon ridges are the visual subject, and they hold up close.
- Rust against teal — an unusual pairing for a forest print, and the reason this one carries a room instead of receding into it.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4-A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
The cinnamon bark is warm enough to sit against clay, rust or a soft terracotta wall, and it also holds on plain warm white where the teal sky does the work. Natural oak is the obvious frame; white keeps the sky reading as sky rather than as a dark block. It is a strong entryway or stairwell print because the vertical trunk suits a tall narrow wall, as in the arched alcove shot in the photographs above.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? This one benefits from height. 24" x 36" or 30" x 40" lets the bark texture and the two figures on the trail read properly. At 12" x 18" the walkers become almost invisible and you lose the scale trick.
Does it come framed? Paper prints ship unframed and rolled. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang in white, black, espresso or natural.
What does the poster say? The main line reads CALAVERAS BIG TREES, with STATE PARK and CALIFORNIA in smaller caps below. The park sits in the Sierra Nevada foothills of Calaveras County and protects two groves of giant sequoia.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Three ways to print it.
Same artwork, same colour-managed printing — the material decides how it hangs and how much wall it holds.

Thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks.
- The most affordable option, and the one to pick if you already own a frame.
- Reads slightly softer than canvas.
- Ships rolled in a rigid tube.
Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.
- No glass, so no glare — good for bright rooms.
- Holds a touch more contrast than paper.
- Boxed with corner guards.
Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
- White and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
- The usual choice for a feature wall — nothing to assemble.
