A Boathouse Row Philadelphia poster that catches the row at the moment the lights win over the sky. Ten Victorian boathouses stand shoulder to shoulder on the east bank of the Schuylkill, every gable, dormer and turret traced in strings of amber bulbs, and the whole line drops into the black water as long ribbons of gold.
About the artwork
Flat vector illustration with hard-edged shapes and no outlines. The palette runs deep plum and indigo at the top of the sky down through burnt orange and amber at the horizon, against navy and slate blue water. Bare tree silhouettes fill the bank behind the roofline; lit windows sit in the stone and half-timbered facades as small squares of ochre. The reflections are drawn as broken vertical bands rather than a smooth mirror. Type is set in a wide white sans serif reading PHILADELPHIA over PENNSYLVANIA, spaced across the upper sky. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- A local's landmark — the view rowers, runners and Kelly Drive commuters know by heart, not another Liberty Bell.
- Warm light on a dark ground — the amber bulbs read across a room, so the print holds a wall at night as well as by day.
- Architecture worth looking at — Tudor gables, a corner tower and stepped rooflines are all drawn distinctly rather than blurred into a mass.
- Reads as a pair — the vertical format and dusk palette hang well beside other river or harbour scenes.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4-A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
The indigo and burnt orange want a wall with some depth behind them. It looks strongest on the sage green wall in the photographs above, and just as good on warm terracotta or a deep charcoal in a living room. Over walnut or oak furniture the amber lights pick up the wood grain. In a white room, a black frame keeps the night sky from floating.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? Above a sofa or a bed, go 24" x 36" or larger so the row of boathouses stays legible. For a gallery wall or a narrow hallway, 12" x 18" or 16" x 24" sits better.
Does it come framed? Paper arrives rolled and unframed. Matte canvas is stretched and ready to hang. Framed canvas comes in a solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
What does the poster say? The printed type reads PHILADELPHIA with PENNSYLVANIA beneath it. The words Boathouse Row do not appear on the artwork.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Three ways to print it.
Same artwork, same colour-managed printing — the material decides how it hangs and how much wall it holds.
Fine art paper
Thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks.
- The most affordable option, and the one to pick if you already own a frame.
- Reads slightly softer than canvas.
- Ships rolled in a rigid tube.
Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.
- No glass, so no glare — good for bright rooms.
- Holds a touch more contrast than paper.
- Boxed with corner guards.
Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
- White and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
- The usual choice for a feature wall — nothing to assemble.
