An illustrated Bisti badlands New Mexico poster built around a single formation. A pale, deeply gullied butte rises out of a flat plain, banded with rust and cream strata and topped by thin spires carrying wing-shaped slabs of caprock. Smaller versions of the same shape sit to the left and right. The foreground is dried, cracked mud with one shallow blue rain pool, a scatter of low grey-green shrubs, and a full field of stars overhead.
About the artwork
A painted illustration with the erosion channels drawn in as fine radiating lines down every slope, not flat vector shapes. Colours are restrained and dry: bone, buff and pale grey in the clay, brick red and rust in the exposed bands and the base, sand and clay pink across the flats, sage in the scrub. Above, a deep teal-to-navy gradient carries hundreds of small stars, with a bank of warmly lit cumulus sitting low on both sides of the butte. The rain pool doubles the sky at bottom left. Title in white capitals over three lines, BISTI/DE-NA-ZIN, WILDERNESS, NEW MEXICO. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- One formation, no clutter. The composition is almost a portrait of a single butte, which makes it a stronger focal piece than a wide badlands panorama.
- Winged hoodoos. The thin caprock slabs balanced on stems are the shapes the Bisti is known for, and they are drawn accurately here.
- Trailless wilderness. Bisti/De-Na-Zin has no marked trails and no facilities — you navigate by landmark, which is exactly what this print shows.
- Neutral palette, high drama. Bone and rust under a dark sky, so it adds weight to a room without adding colour.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4-A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
Bone, clay pink and rust make this one of the easiest desert prints to place — it sits happily on white, greige and soft pink walls and next to linen, rattan and unglazed ceramic. Over a bed it reads calm because the palette is so narrow; the teak sideboard and dried grasses setting shown above is close to ideal. A white frame keeps it airy, espresso brings out the red bands. Avoid busy wallpaper behind it; the erosion detail needs quiet.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? 12" x 18" works on a shelf or in a gallery wall. For a bedroom or living room wall, 24" x 36" lets the gully lines and the star field both register. 30" x 40" makes the butte close to life-scale in a hallway.
Does it come framed? Paper and matte canvas ship unframed. Framed canvas arrives in a solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural, ready to hang.
What does the poster say? The text reads BISTI/DE-NA-ZIN on the first line, WILDERNESS on the second and NEW MEXICO on the third, in white capitals.
Where is the Bisti? South of Farmington in the San Juan Basin of northwest New Mexico, managed by the Bureau of Land Management as the Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wilderness. De-Na-Zin is a Navajo name referring to the cranes once carved in the area.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Matte canvas

Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
