An Alesund travel poster from the hill above the town: the whole art nouveau centre laid out on its narrow spit between two channels of flat blue water, with low islands and a saw-toothed range far out on the horizon.
About the artwork
This one is nearly a monochrome. Sky, sea, islands and headlands are all worked in blue, from pale ice blue at the horizon through mid blue for the water to a dark slate for the rock in the foreground, so the town becomes the single warm event in the middle of the sheet. Ålesund is drawn small and dense: hundreds of gabled buildings in pink, mint, cream, butter and ochre under dark roofs, streets you can trace between them, a church tower, quays and boats along both shores. The water is glass, ruled with fine horizontal lines and holding soft mirrored shapes of the hills. Beyond the town, rounded islands step back in flattening blues, and a low band of jagged peaks sits on the horizon under a sky that warms from blue to pale yellow. Bottom left, a rock outcrop and one wind-bent tree fix the viewpoint. Title in wide-tracked uppercase with Norway beneath. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- A whole town in one frame. Streets, harbours and church tower, all legible at map scale.
- Blue on blue on blue. A restrained palette that reads calm, not like a holiday snapshot.
- The colour lives in the middle. Pastel gables give one bright band and leave the rest quiet.
- Made to order. Printed after you buy, colour-managed, never warehoused.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4–A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
Almost tonal, so it behaves like a piece of quiet architecture on the wall: good over a desk, in a home office or along a hallway where you pass it close and read the detail. Cool whites and pale grey walls suit it, and birch or ash furniture keeps the Nordic feel. A slim black frame sharpens the water. Hang it in a row with the Bryggen Bergen and Lofoten prints for a wall of west-coast Norwegian towns rather than empty landscape.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? Above a console or desk, 12" x 18" or 16" x 24". Above a sofa, bed or mantel, go 24" x 36" or larger so the print holds the wall.
Does it come framed? Paper prints ship unframed and fit standard frames. Choose a framed canvas if you would rather skip the framing shop.
Where is the view taken from? From the hill directly above the town, the viewpoint reached by the long flight of steps, looking out over the centre toward the open sea and the peaks beyond.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Materials
Three ways to print it.
Same artwork, same colour-managed printing — the material decides how it hangs and how much wall it holds.
Fine art paper
Thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks.
- The most affordable option, and the one to pick if you already own a frame.
- Reads slightly softer than canvas.
- Ships rolled in a rigid tube.
Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.
- No glass, so no glare — good for bright rooms.
- Holds a touch more contrast than paper.
- Boxed with corner guards.
Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
- White and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
- The usual choice for a feature wall — nothing to assemble.
