A Whitby travel poster looking down from the west side of the town: red pantile roofs tumbling towards the water, the harbour channel running out between its stone piers, and the roofless abbey standing on the sandstone cliff opposite.
About the artwork
Orange against blue, and almost nothing else — but the orange is where the drawing happens. The roofs are done tile by tile in warm terracotta and rust, broken by chimney stacks, dormer windows, a skylight in cool blue, and pale render and brick on the walls between them; they pile up the left side of the sheet and reappear along the bottom edge so you feel your own height above the town. The quay below has railings, mooring posts and small figures walking the stone jetty that reaches into the channel. On the right the cliff rises in tan and buff strata with a zigzag path cut up its face, the abbey's arched gable ends and empty window openings standing pale on the skyline beside a squat church tower. Water fills the middle in flat blue with fine ripple lines and a darker band under the far wall. Title in wide-tracked uppercase with England beneath. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- Roofs drawn tile by tile. The old town is the real subject, not just a backdrop to the ruin.
- Orange and blue at full strength. Complementary colours, which is why it reads from across a room.
- Told from above. The high viewpoint gives it depth a harbour-level view cannot.
- Made to order. Printed after you buy, colour-managed, never warehoused.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4–A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
The terracotta is warm enough to hold a north-facing room together. Put it on cream, putty or muted teal paint, near dark wood, wrought iron and wool, and it settles into a snug, a kitchen or a hallway with old flagstones. A dark stained or espresso frame deepens the rooftops; natural oak makes them glow instead. It reads well stacked above or below the store's other Yorkshire and north-east coast prints.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? Above a console or desk, 12" x 18" or 16" x 24". Above a sofa, bed or mantel, go 24" x 36" or larger so the print holds the wall.
Does it come framed? Paper prints ship unframed and fit standard frames. Choose a framed canvas if you would rather skip the framing shop.
What is the building on the cliff? The abbey ruin, drawn with its arched gable and window openings open to the sky, with the parish church tower just to its left.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Materials
Three ways to print it.
Same artwork, same colour-managed printing — the material decides how it hangs and how much wall it holds.
Fine art paper
Thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks.
- The most affordable option, and the one to pick if you already own a frame.
- Reads slightly softer than canvas.
- Ships rolled in a rigid tube.
Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.
- No glass, so no glare — good for bright rooms.
- Holds a touch more contrast than paper.
- Boxed with corner guards.
Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
- White and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
- The usual choice for a feature wall — nothing to assemble.
