A Washington Square Arch poster that stands in the middle of the plaza and looks straight through the opening: the ivory marble arch fills the width of the frame, and centred beneath it the Empire State Building rises above the long green corridor of Fifth Avenue. A low tiered fountain, park benches, street lamps and dozens of small walking figures fill the paving below, with mature trees leaning in from both edges.
About the artwork
Flat vector illustration built from hard-edged shapes and soft tonal banding rather than outlines. The palette runs dusty slate blue in the sky, ivory and warm grey across the marble, olive and sage in the tree canopies, terracotta brick on the tall building at right and pale tan brick on the block at left, with teal-grey shadow under the vault. Carved detail is drawn in: the spandrel medallions, the eagle keystone, the dentil cornice and the frieze lettering. Typography sits in the open sky in white spaced capitals, WASHINGTON SQUARE ARCH above a smaller NEW YORK CITY. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- One view, two landmarks — the arch frames the Empire State Building, so a single print carries both downtown and midtown Manhattan.
- Cool blue and ivory — a restrained scheme that reads calm from across a room instead of shouting.
- Architecture drawn properly — medallions, keystone eagle and cornice are all rendered, not suggested.
- For anyone who knows the Village — students, NYU alumni, chess players and anyone who has crossed that plaza on a warm evening.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4-A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
The dusty blue sky and ivory marble sit easily on white, pale grey or soft green walls, and the terracotta brick at the right edge picks up warm clay tones in a room. Light oak suits the ivory, as in the plain white wall photograph above, while the black frame against the sage green wall sharpens the arch and pushes the sky forward. In a bedroom the gold frame plays off the marble carving.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? Above a sofa or a bed, 24" x 36" holds the wall. For a hallway, a gallery wall or a desk, 12" x 18" or 16" x 24" keeps the arch readable without crowding.
Does it come framed? Paper and matte canvas ship unframed. The framed canvas option arrives in a solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural, ready to hang.
What does the poster say? The sky carries WASHINGTON SQUARE ARCH with NEW YORK CITY beneath it, and the frieze across the arch itself is lettered WASHINGTON PARK in faint carved relief.
Is the Empire State Building really visible from the arch? Yes. The arch sits at the foot of Fifth Avenue, and the view north through the opening runs straight up the avenue to midtown, which is the sightline this print is drawn from.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.
