A Volendam travel poster from the end of the quay at low sun: a brick pavement running out along the harbour, traditional wooden boats moored under blue-grey gabled houses, and flat, still water reaching to a very low horizon.
About the artwork
A study in two temperatures. The bottom third is the quay itself, laid in small terracotta pavers drawn brick by brick, warm apricot where the sun rakes across and dusty rose in the hollows, with the joints picked out in fine dark line; a cut wooden mooring post stands in the near right corner and more run along the edge. Above it, everything cools. The water is a flat pale blue-green with the faintest ripple. The houses on the left are painted blue-grey and teal with white gable boards, white window frames and steep pitched roofs, a black lamp standard in front of them. Moored along their frontage lie wooden boats with varnished brown hulls, cream cabins and tall bare masts crossed by gaff spars. Out to the right a low timber pier and a single distant mast sit on empty water under a hazy teal sky. Titled Volendam in wide-tracked uppercase with Netherlands beneath. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- Terracotta brick against teal. Warm ground, cool everything else — the reason the print carries a wall.
- Old wooden hulls. Varnished boats and bare masts rather than modern marina fibreglass.
- A very low horizon. Flat Dutch water and a big quiet sky, with almost nothing on it.
- Made to order. Printed after you buy, colour-managed, never warehoused.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4–A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
The warm brick foreground makes it a good dining-room print, hung where evening light can pick up the apricot. Terracotta, warm plaster and clay walls extend the paving into the room; a soft teal wall does the opposite and pulls out the boats. Rattan chairs, a linen cloth and stoneware plates suit it. An espresso or walnut frame follows the hulls, while natural oak keeps it lighter and more coastal. It sits well beside the Tobermory print as a two-harbour set.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? Above a console or desk, 12" x 18" or 16" x 24". Above a sofa, bed or mantel, go 24" x 36" or larger so the print holds the wall.
Does it come framed? Paper prints ship unframed and fit standard frames. Choose a framed canvas if you would rather skip the framing shop.
What are the boats? Traditional wooden Dutch harbour craft with varnished hulls and tall masts, tied up along the quay in front of the houses.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Materials
Three ways to print it.
Same artwork, same colour-managed printing — the material decides how it hangs and how much wall it holds.
Fine art paper
Thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks.
- The most affordable option, and the one to pick if you already own a frame.
- Reads slightly softer than canvas.
- Ships rolled in a rigid tube.
Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.
- No glass, so no glare — good for bright rooms.
- Holds a touch more contrast than paper.
- Boxed with corner guards.
Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
- White and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
- The usual choice for a feature wall — nothing to assemble.
