A Utrecht travel poster along the old canal in high summer: tables set out on the sunken wharf a full storey below the street, green trees leaning over the brick houses, and the Dom tower standing at the end of the water.
About the artwork
The real subject is the two-level canal. On the left bank the houses sit at street height, but a second quay runs below them right at the waterline — brick arches and cellar doors, a stone stair down, wooden tables and cream parasols laid out under the trees, all clearly lower than the road above. That drop is what makes this canal look like nowhere else, and the drawing puts it front and centre. The right bank is narrower: tall brick houses in red and rust with white window frames and red-tile roofs, doors opening onto a thin walkway. Trees in full leaf lean in from both sides in three or four greens. Further down a low arched bridge crosses, and above the rooflines the tower rises in pale stone, tier on tier, finishing in an open lantern of tracery. The water is still green-teal, carrying long vertical reflections. Title in wide-tracked uppercase with Netherlands beneath. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- The sunken wharf. Cellar doors, steps and cafe parasols a storey below street level, drawn clearly enough to explain themselves.
- Full summer green. Leaf canopies on both banks against red brick, warm and cool in equal measure.
- The tower closes the view. Its pale openwork top anchors the far end of the canal.
- Made to order. Printed after you buy, colour-managed, never warehoused.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4–A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
Green water and leaf canopy dominate, so it settles onto warm white, sand, clay or muted green walls and lifts a room with a lot of wood in it. Good over a dining table or a desk, where the wharf detail gets looked at. Natural oak frames follow the trees; black pulls out the brick and the tower. It reads as a pair with the Delft canal print, and as a trio with Amsterdam if you want a Dutch wall.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? Above a console or desk, 12" x 18" or 16" x 24". Above a sofa, bed or mantel, go 24" x 36" or larger so the print holds the wall.
Does it come framed? Paper prints ship unframed and fit standard frames. Choose a framed canvas if you would rather skip the framing shop.
What is the lower level along the canal? The old wharves — a working quay with cellar doors cut under the houses, now used for cafe seating, which is why the tables sit below the roadway.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Materials
Three ways to print it.
Same artwork, same colour-managed printing — the material decides how it hangs and how much wall it holds.
Fine art paper
Thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks.
- The most affordable option, and the one to pick if you already own a frame.
- Reads slightly softer than canvas.
- Ships rolled in a rigid tube.
Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.
- No glass, so no glare — good for bright rooms.
- Holds a touch more contrast than paper.
- Boxed with corner guards.
Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
- White and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
- The usual choice for a feature wall — nothing to assemble.
