A Turnip Rock Michigan poster of the limestone stack that sits just off the tip of Michigan's Thumb in Lake Huron. Wave action has cut the base away to a narrow waist, leaving a broad cap that carries a small crown of pines. The water around it is clear enough to show the sandbars underneath, a wooded shoreline curves in from the right, and distant sails cross the horizon under a bank of tall cumulus.
About the artwork
The style is illustrative and heavily layered, with the rock built up in stacked strata of cream, tan and rust, and each pine drawn as a separate silhouetted tier. The palette leans on Great Lakes colour: turquoise and jade in the shallows, deeper slate blue offshore, warm sand along the beach, and two greens — a bright new-growth green on the stack's pines against a darker foliage green in the foreground branches. Cloud towers are painted in cream with grey-blue undersides. The title band across the lower left reads TURNIP ROCK in heavy condensed capitals with MICHIGAN spaced beneath. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- One of the strangest shapes on the Great Lakes — the undercut waist and pine-topped cap are unmistakable.
- Freshwater colour, not ocean colour — the jade shallows and visible sandbars read as Lake Huron rather than a sea coast.
- Hard to reach, easy to hang — the rock stands offshore beyond private land and is normally seen only from a kayak, so most people have only viewed it from the water.
- Framed by real foreground — overhanging branches and a rocky shore give the composition depth instead of a flat horizon.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4-A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
Jade and sand make this an easy match for warm white, oat and pale green rooms, and it sits nicely with cane, linen and light oak. Against a deeper green wall the turquoise water becomes the focus. In the photographs above it works both over a cream sofa and propped on a shelf; a white or natural frame keeps the lake tones fresh, while espresso deepens the foreground foliage.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? The stack sits left of centre with plenty of water around it, so the composition holds at smaller sizes. 12" x 18" suits a gallery wall; 24" x 36" gives the pines and strata room to show.
Does it come framed? Paper and matte canvas ship unframed. Framed canvas arrives in a solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural, ready to hang.
What does the poster say? The printed lettering reads TURNIP ROCK with MICHIGAN below it, set across the lower left over the shallows.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Materials
Three ways to print it.
Same artwork, same colour-managed printing — the material decides how it hangs and how much wall it holds.
Fine art paper
Thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks.
- The most affordable option, and the one to pick if you already own a frame.
- Reads slightly softer than canvas.
- Ships rolled in a rigid tube.
Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.
- No glass, so no glare — good for bright rooms.
- Holds a touch more contrast than paper.
- Boxed with corner guards.
Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
- White and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
- The usual choice for a feature wall — nothing to assemble.
