A Tokyo street print for a living room that likes a bit of noise. A shopping street is crowded with shop signs, lanterns and tangled power lines, all under a blue sky with white clouds. "TOKYO JAPAN" and "1988" are lettered on the design. It feels like standing at the end of the block, deciding where to go first.
About the artwork
This one is drawn in illustrated line work, so every sign, lantern and wire has its own outline. The street is dense with detail, while the blue sky and white clouds above give the eye a place to rest. The lettering reads "TOKYO JAPAN" and "1988", set like the title of an old travel poster. The more you look, the more small signs you find tucked between the others. Portrait.
Why you'll love it
- Detail that keeps paying off. Signs, lanterns and power lines fill the street, so there is always another corner to look at.
- Drawn, not photographed. Line illustration gives the busy street a clean, graphic finish.
- A date on the sheet. The 1988 in the lettering gives it the feel of a keepsake poster from a trip.
- Sky to balance the street. The open blue sky with white clouds keeps the dense scene from feeling heavy.
- Made to order. Printed after you buy, colour-managed, never warehoused.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Thirteen sizes in all: 8" x 12" through 30" x 40", plus A4–A1.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang. 12" x 16" to 30" x 40".
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural. 12" x 16" to 30" x 40".
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
Hang it in a living room with a simple backdrop, such as a white, oatmeal or pale blue wall, so the busy street has room. A leather sofa, a rattan chair or a shelf of books suits its lived-in feel. Go 24" x 36" if it hangs alone; 18" x 24" works inside a gallery wall. Pair it with a quieter single-subject print, like a pagoda or Mount Fuji, to give the eye a break.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
Does 1988 mean the scene is from that year? 1988 is part of the lettering, printed with TOKYO JAPAN. The illustration is a new retro-style design, not a historical record.
Where does it look best? On a living room wall with a plain background, where the detail can be seen from the sofa. It also holds its own in a gallery wall at 18" x 24".
Is it too busy for a small wall? The drawing is dense, so on a small wall choose 12" x 18" or 16" x 24" and keep nearby decor plain.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick 200 gsm archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.
Paper weight, inks, frame details and care are all in our Material Guide.

Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.

Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
