A Sleeping Bear Dunes poster looking north along the top of the dune bluff. Amber sand fills most of the frame in long ridges, tufted with clumps of marram grass and cut by deep blue shadows. The bluff breaks off in a pale sand cliff halfway up the picture and drops straight into Lake Michigan, which runs out flat and dark blue to a low island line on the horizon.
About the artwork
Flat vector illustration built from hard-edged shapes, with the sand modelled in stepped bands rather than gradients — the dune surface counts out as five separate tones, from near-white highlight through marigold and amber to a burnt orange in the hollows. Every shadow is blue rather than brown, which is what gives the print its charge: the picture is essentially orange against blue with nothing in between. The grass clumps are drawn blade by blade in dark teal and olive. Water is deep cobalt with fine white wave marks. Typography is a white sans-serif reading SLEEPING BEAR DUNES with MICHIGAN below in smaller letterspaced caps. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- Orange and blue at full strength — the most graphic print in the series, and the one that carries furthest across a room.
- The bluff edge, not just a beach — you can see the drop from the dune top to the lake, which is the whole point of this place.
- Drawn texture — individual grass blades and footprint hollows in the sand, so it holds up close as well as far.
- For Michigan summers — a specific gift for anyone who has climbed the dune or driven the Pierce Stocking loop.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4-A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — stretched on a wooden bar in a solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
This one is warm and loud, so it wants space around it. It looks best on a plain pale wall — white, chalk or the beige console wall in the photographs above — where nothing competes with the amber. On the terracotta wall shown here the sand tones blend in and the blue lake does the separating instead. A black frame contains it; light oak lets the orange run on into the wood.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? A bold print like this suits a single large placement — 24" x 36" or 30" x 40" on its own wall. In a gallery group it can overpower quieter prints unless you keep it to 12" x 18".
Does it come framed? Paper and matte canvas ship unframed. The framed canvas option arrives in a solid wood floating frame, wired and ready to hang.
What does the poster say? SLEEPING BEAR DUNES runs across the sky at the top, with MICHIGAN beneath it in smaller capitals. No other text is printed.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.
