A helsinki senate square poster taken from ground level across the paving: an enormous field of cobbles filling the lower half of the frame, and the white neoclassical cathedral standing above it with its tall green dome and four smaller ones, columns and pediments picked out in low winter light.
About the artwork
The boldest composition in the collection, because it is so nearly empty. The bottom half is nothing but stone — thousands of individual setts drawn one by one in sand, taupe and grey-brown, each with its own shadow, the rows curving gently away and shrinking to a hairline at the horizon. Above that there is a clean break and then the cathedral, painted in warm white and pale cream with cool blue-grey shadow doing all the modelling: the colonnades, the pediment sculpture, the steps, the gilded crosses. The domes are a muted verdigris green — the only saturated colour in the picture. The sky is a single flat wash of dusty blue that grades slightly lighter towards the buildings. Why is the square so empty? The view is drawn low and close to the paving, so the cobbles fill the foreground and the square reads as the vast open space it is.

Damage, defects & care
Every piece is printed for you after you order, so we cannot take a print back for a change of mind — please check the size and material first. Our Size Guide shows every size drawn to scale.
If it arrives damaged, misprinted or simply wrong, email us within 14 days with photos of the piece and the packaging. We reprint and reship it free, and there is nothing to send back.
Keep artwork out of direct sunlight. Wipe framed canvas with a dry, soft cloth. Handle paper prints by the edges until they are framed.
