An Apostle Islands sea caves poster taken from the water, close under the sandstone cliffs of the Lake Superior shoreline. Rust and ochre rock fills the right side of the frame, undercut by two dark arches and a low cave mouth. A second headland of the same eroded stone runs into the distance on the left, birch and spruce clinging to the rim, and the whole lower half is clear turquoise water broken into ripples.
About the artwork
Flat vector illustration built from hard-edged shapes, with the rock face described by dozens of stacked colour bands rather than any gradient — that layering is what reads as bedded sandstone. The palette counts out as burnt orange, rust, terracotta and pale bone in the cliff; deep forest and moss green along the rim; and four blues in the lake, from sunlit aqua and sand-coloured shallows in the foreground to a cold teal at the cave mouths. Orange reflections carry the rock down into the water. Typography is a white sans-serif reading APOSTLE ISLANDS, with WISCONSIN below in smaller letterspaced caps, the last letters running behind the cliff edge. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- Water you can see through — the shallows are drawn in ripple bands with the bottom showing through, not painted as a flat blue block.
- Two complementary colours doing all the work — rust orange against turquoise, which is why the print holds a wall from across the room.
- The caves specifically — this is the kayak-level view of the mainland sea caves, not a general island scene.
- For Great Lakes people — a real gift for anyone who has paddled out of Meyers Beach or waited on the ice caves in winter.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4-A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
The rust cliff makes this an easy match for warm rooms — it sits naturally against the terracotta wall and walnut sideboard in the photographs above, where the orange in the rock and the wood grain agree. On a cool wall the turquoise takes over instead and the print reads as a water picture. Light oak framing keeps it warm; black framing pushes the contrast between the rock and the lake.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? The rippled water and the layered rock both gain at scale, so 24" x 36" upward is the better buy for a main wall. 16" x 24" works in a group.
Does it come framed? Paper and matte canvas ship unframed. The framed canvas option arrives in a solid wood floating frame, wired and ready to hang.
What does the poster say? The printed text is APOSTLE ISLANDS with WISCONSIN beneath it — not the words sea caves. The final letters of WISCONSIN pass behind the cliff, which is part of the design.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.
