A San Juan Puerto Rico poster taken from the rocks on the Atlantic side. A turquoise wave curls and breaks across the foreground, the headland falls away in tan rock and grass tufts on the right, and across the water the old Spanish fort holds the point: cut-stone bastions, a round sentry turret on the corner, and a terracotta building with a domed tower above the wall. Tall cumulus stacks up behind it.
About the artwork
Screenprint-style illustration with layered flat colour and dense hatching, so the surf is drawn as lines of foam rather than blended gradients. The palette is deep navy and petrol blue in the open ocean, aqua and turquoise where the wave thins, cream white in the foam and clouds, warm limestone and sand in the fort walls, ochre and olive on the headland, and one strong terracotta red on the tower and roofs. Details to look for are the sentry box perched on the bastion corner, the green shutters along the red building, the dark rock shelf at the waterline, and the thin cirrus streaks combed across the upper sky. The type reads SAN JUAN with PUERTO RICO beneath, both in white capitals. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- Fort and ocean together — the history and the coast in one frame, not just a beach view.
- The wave does the work — hatched foam gives the lower half real movement and keeps the eye travelling up to the walls.
- Terracotta against turquoise — one warm red note in a cool blue print, which is what makes it read from a distance.
- Recognisable silhouette — anyone who has walked the old city wall knows that sentry turret immediately.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4-A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
Navy and turquoise are strong, so a white, chalk or pale blue-grey wall gives them room; the terracotta tower then picks up clay pots, leather and warm wood. It suits a living room above a sideboard, or a bathroom or hallway where the sea colours feel at home. In the terracotta room in the photographs above, the black frame pulls out the navy; a natural oak frame instead follows the sandstone of the fort.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? The hatched surf detail rewards scale, so 24" x 36" is the sweet spot over a sofa or bed. For a narrow wall or a pair with another island print, 16" x 24" keeps the balance.
Does it come framed? Paper prints ship rolled and unframed. Matte canvas arrives stretched and ready to hang, and framed canvas adds a solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
What does the poster say? Only two lines of type: SAN JUAN across the top and PUERTO RICO below it, both in white capitals. The fort itself is not labelled on the print.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
