A rila monastery poster from the cobbled courtyard, with the church's boldly striped arcade filling the right of the frame, painted frescoes glowing under the arches, and a wall of forested mountain rising directly behind the roofs.
About the artwork
The striping is the whole character of the place and the drawing leans into it hard. Every arch is built from alternating cream and near-black voussoirs, the piers are banded the same way, and above them the upper wall runs in red and white courses — a rhythm so strong it is almost a textile. Inside the arcade the lunettes and wall panels are filled with fresco work in deep oxblood red, indigo and touches of gold, drawn as suggested figures and scenes rather than picked out detail. Slim grey stone columns with plain square capitals hold the porch, standing on a low sandstone plinth. Above, a scalloped grey-green cornice ripples along the roofline and small lead domes sit behind it, leading up to the main dome on its tall arcaded drum with a cross finial against the sky. To the left the rough brown stone defensive tower stands square and blank, and beyond it the white residential wings show red-and-black striped galleries. Dark spruce and a bare rocky peak fill the background. Large rounded cobbles cover the bottom third. The place name — Rila, not the longer monastery name — in wide-tracked uppercase with Bulgaria beneath. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- Pattern you can read across a room. The black and cream banding works like graphic art.
- Fresco colour under the arches. Oxblood, indigo and gold in the shadowed porch.
- Mountain and building together. The forested ridge presses right up behind the roofs.
- Made to order. Printed after you buy, colour-managed, never warehoused.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4–A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
This is the most graphic print of the group and it wants a darker, warmer room than the others — a study, a library corner or a snug with clay, deep olive or tobacco walls. Walnut and espresso frames suit the black banding; a black frame doubles down on it. It looks right with kilim rugs, brass lamps and old leather. Because the pattern is strong, give it space and do not hang it in a gallery wall of busy prints.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? Above a console or desk, 12" x 18" or 16" x 24". Above a sofa, bed or mantel, go 24" x 36" or larger so the print holds the wall.
Does it come framed? Paper prints ship unframed and fit standard frames. Choose a framed canvas if you would rather skip the framing shop.
What words are printed on it? The lettering reads Rila, with Bulgaria beneath — the shorter place name rather than the full monastery name.
What are the paintings under the arches? They are the exterior frescoes on the church porch, shown as blocks of red, blue and gold rather than individual figures.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.

Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
