A Japanese dragon print for a living room that can take a dark, dramatic wall. A red dragon twists through clouds of cream and red and over black waves, with a black pagoda standing behind it. The title TERA NO SHUGO-SHA names it the guardian of the temple, and the pose fits the job.
About the artwork
Red, cream and black are the only colors, and the black background takes in the black pagoda so it sits back behind the dragon. The body bends back and forth across the sheet, weaving between the cream-red clouds and the black waves. The lettering reads "TERA NO SHUGO-SHA" with 寺の守護神 in kanji, meaning "guardian deity of the temple." Woodblock-style and inspired by ukiyo-e, with flat color throughout. Portrait.
Why you'll love it
- A dragon with a role. The lettering calls it the temple's guardian, which gives the picture a story beyond decoration.
- Black ground, red subject. Almost nothing competes with the dragon, so it holds a large wall from across the room.
- The pagoda in shadow. Black on black, the pagoda recedes into the background and adds depth without adding another color.
- Cream clouds break the dark. The pale cream in the clouds keeps the print from turning heavy and gives the red something to glow against.
- Made to order. Printed after you buy, colour-managed, never warehoused.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Thirteen sizes in all: 8" x 12" through 30" x 40", plus A4–A1.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang. 12" x 16" to 30" x 40".
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural. 12" x 16" to 30" x 40".
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
Hang it over a sofa or a sideboard in a living room with warm white, gray or even black walls; on dark paint the black ground blends in and the red dragon seems to float. At 24" x 36" it anchors a standard sofa wall, and 30" x 40" suits a tall room or a wide fireplace wall. Choose a black floating frame for a clean edge or espresso for warmth. Pair it with deep red cushions on the sofa to carry the color across the room.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What does 寺の守護神 mean? It means "guardian deity of the temple." It sits on the print with the romanized title TERA NO SHUGO-SHA.
Will a black background make my room feel darker? On a light wall it adds depth rather than gloom, because the red and cream stand out against it. Warm lighting keeps the dragon bright.
Which frame color should I choose? Black lets the edge merge with the black background for a seamless look. Espresso or natural wood adds a warmer border if the room already has wood furniture.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick 200 gsm archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.
