A Painted Hills Oregon poster looking across the mounds from a sagebrush rise. Rounded claystone hills run in horizontal bands of gold, brick and buff, cut by fine vertical rills, with one oxblood hill in shadow at the left and a pale dry wash threading between them. A flat-topped rimrock ridge closes the middle distance under a stack of cumulus.
About the artwork
Painterly illustration built from soft tonal layers, with the erosion rills drawn as thin repeated strokes down each slope rather than as texture fills. The palette is mustard and ochre along the upper bands, brick red and rose through the middle, bone and pale sand in the wash, deep maroon on the shaded foreground hill, and grey-green sagebrush across the bottom edge. Above it all sits a deep steel-blue sky with tall cream thunderheads and thin cirrus, which is what gives the hills their scale. A single juniper stands at the lower right. White capitals across the base read PAINTED HILLS, with OREGON letterspaced below. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- The banding is drawn, not filtered — each colour layer follows the contour of the mound, the way the ash beds actually lie.
- A big sky — the cumulus takes up the top third, so the print carries a horizon feel that most desert art misses.
- High desert palette — mustard, brick and sage read as eastern Oregon rather than generic southwest red rock.
- Quiet enough for a bedroom — the tones are muted and matte, with no hard black anywhere in the image.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4-A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
Mustard and brick against a steel-blue sky make this an easy match for oatmeal, mushroom and warm white walls, and it works beside walnut furniture and wool textiles. On a slate blue wall the clay bands warm up noticeably. Natural oak frames suit the sagebrush foreground, as in the low bookshelf and window photographs above; black frames sharpen it for a home office.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? The rill detail on the mounds shows best at 24" x 36" and 30" x 40". At 12" x 18" or 16" x 24" the colour banding and cloud stack still read across a room.
Does it come framed? Paper and matte canvas ship unframed. Framed canvas arrives in a solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural, with hanging hardware fitted.
Where in Oregon is this? The Painted Hills are a unit of the John Day Fossil Beds in Wheeler County, out past Mitchell in the high desert east of the Cascades — the view here is the classic one from the overlook trail above the mounds.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks.
- The most affordable option, and the one to pick if you already own a frame.
- Reads slightly softer than canvas.
- Ships rolled in a rigid tube.
Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.
- No glass, so no glare — good for bright rooms.
- Holds a touch more contrast than paper.
- Boxed with corner guards.
Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
- White and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
- The usual choice for a feature wall — nothing to assemble.
