A Mount Washington New Hampshire poster that puts the Cog Railway on the mountain instead of the summit sign. A maroon coach and its black locomotive grind up the rack track on a bare alpine shoulder while a white plume of steam unrolls across the sky. Gold grass, split granite blocks and the blue ridges of the Presidential Range fill in behind the engine.
About the artwork
Painterly digital illustration with visible brushwork and soft shading rather than flat vector shapes. The palette runs cream and ivory through the cumulus, slate blue across the upper sky, teal and dusty blue in the stacked ridges, olive and moss on the shoulder of the mountain, gold-tan in the alpine grass, and warm maroon on the passenger coach. Steam does most of the work: one heavy column off the stack, a second thin wisp drifting from the far slope. Foreground granite is drawn block by block along the trestle. White capitals sit along the bottom edge: MOUNT WASHINGTON, with NEW HAMPSHIRE spaced out beneath. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- The railway, not just the peak — the cog train and its rack track are the subject, so the print reads as a specific ride rather than a generic mountain.
- Weather you can feel — the towering cumulus takes up more than half the sheet, which is honest for the mountain that advertises the worst weather in America.
- Warm accent in a cool scene — the maroon and cream coach is the one warm note against blue and olive, and it pulls the eye straight to the track.
- Reads from across the room — big cloud shapes and a single diagonal ridge line stay legible at 12" x 18" and at 30" x 40".
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4-A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
The cream clouds carry a lot of light, so this one holds up on warm white, oatmeal and pale grey walls without going flat. Against a deeper slate or petrol blue wall the olive slope and maroon coach separate more sharply. Natural oak suits the gold grass, as in the sideboard and windowsill photographs above; black frames push the sky cooler and suit a study or stair wall.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? Above a sideboard or a bed, 18" x 24" or 24" x 36" keeps the cloud mass readable. In a gallery wall or a narrow hallway, 12" x 18" is enough because the steam plume and the ridge line carry the composition.
Does it come framed? Paper and matte canvas ship unframed. The framed canvas option arrives in a solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural, with hanging hardware fitted.
Is this the same as the White Mountains print? No. Mount Washington is the high point of the White Mountains, and this design stays on the summit cone and the cog railway. The shop also carries a separate White Mountains design that shows the wider range, so the two can hang together without repeating each other.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.

Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
