A Mechelen travel poster built around one enormous tower: the pale limestone cathedral tower squared off at the top where the spire was never finished, a clock face high on its side, and a run of stepped and scrolled Flemish gables leading away from it down the cobbled square.
About the artwork
The tower takes the left half of the sheet and is drawn almost as a portrait — buttresses, blind tracery, pinnacles at the corners, the clock, and the flat top that gives it away. Sun falls on its west face, so one side is warm cream and the other is a cool violet grey, which is what keeps such a big shape from going dead. From the tower a terrace of houses walks off to the right and gets more ornamental as it goes: crow-stepped gables, scrolled and pedimented fronts in ochre, sandstone and burnt orange, red pantile roofs, shop doors and window frames all drawn in. The cobbles in the foreground are laid out in fans and carry long diagonal shadows. The sky is one flat teal. Title in wide-tracked uppercase with Belgium beneath. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- A tower with a story in its shape. The flat, unfinished top is the thing that makes this skyline unmistakable.
- Gables drawn one by one. Every house on the row gets its own front, its own colour and its own roofline.
- Warm stone against flat teal. Cream, ochre and terracotta held in place by a single cool sky.
- Made to order. Printed after you buy, colour-managed, never warehoused.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4–A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
The vertical tower makes this a good print for a narrow wall — a hallway, a stairwell, the space beside a doorway. Warm neutrals suit it: putty, clay, oatmeal and warm white. It looks right with oak or walnut, rattan and unglazed ceramic, and the teal sky picks up any petrol-blue textile in the room. A black frame sharpens the architecture; espresso wood leans into the roof tiles. Hang it with the Leuven or Bruges prints as a Flemish set.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? Above a console or desk, 12" x 18" or 16" x 24". Above a sofa, bed or mantel, go 24" x 36" or larger so the print holds the wall.
Does it come framed? Paper prints ship unframed and fit standard frames. Choose a framed canvas if you would rather skip the framing shop.
Why does the tower look cut off at the top? Because it is: the great cathedral tower on the Grote Markt was never given the spire it was designed for, and the flat top is drawn exactly as it stands.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Three ways to print it.
Same artwork, same colour-managed printing — the material decides how it hangs and how much wall it holds.
Fine art paper
Thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks.
- The most affordable option, and the one to pick if you already own a frame.
- Reads slightly softer than canvas.
- Ships rolled in a rigid tube.
Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.
- No glass, so no glare — good for bright rooms.
- Holds a touch more contrast than paper.
- Boxed with corner guards.
Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
- White and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
- The usual choice for a feature wall — nothing to assemble.
