A Japanese dragon print for a living room wall that can take something bold. A katana stands upright and an ink dragon in black and gray coils around it. A red sun and a few small birds are the only other marks on an empty cream ground. It is strength drawn with restraint.
About the artwork
The painting follows the sumi-e manner: black and gray ink for the dragon, with red kept for the sun and a small seal at the bottom. The dragon's body wraps the vertical blade, so the composition rises along the portrait sheet. A few birds are scattered in flight, and most of the cream ground is left bare, which makes the ink look heavier. Nothing is filled in that does not need to be. Portrait.
Why you'll love it
- Sword and dragon in one line. The dragon is wound around the katana, so the two read as a single vertical shape rather than two subjects.
- Ink with room to breathe. Large areas of empty cream keep a heavy subject from feeling crowded.
- One red note. The red sun and seal are the only color, so they stand out against the gray ink from anywhere in the room.
- Small birds for scale. A few birds in flight make the dragon feel vast without adding detail.
- Made to order. Printed after you buy, colour-managed, never warehoused.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Thirteen sizes in all: 8" x 12" through 30" x 40", plus A4–A1.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang. 12" x 16" to 30" x 40".
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural. 12" x 16" to 30" x 40".
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
Hang it in a living room on a white, stone or light gray wall, above a low media console or a dark wood sideboard. Charcoal upholstery and black accents repeat the ink. At 24" x 36" it holds its own beside a sofa; 30" x 40" suits a tall wall with a high ceiling. Pair it with a quieter sumi-e landscape in gray ink so the dragon has a calm partner.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
How big should it be over a sofa? Choose 24" x 36" for a standard three-seat sofa or 30" x 40" for a larger sofa or a high ceiling. The vertical format adds height where a sofa is long and low.
Is it too dark for a small living room? Most of the sheet is empty cream, so it stays light. The dark ink is concentrated around the sword and the dragon.
Does a black frame suit this ink painting? Yes, a black solid wood floating frame sharpens the ink. Natural or white keeps it lighter on pale walls, and espresso matches dark wood furniture.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick 200 gsm archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.
