A Tent Rocks New Mexico poster looking up a sandy wash at a row of cone-shaped hoodoos, the tallest one capped by a dark boulder that has protected the soft rock beneath it. Horizontal bands run through every cone, junipers and pinyon crowd the slope in the foreground, and a small flock of birds crosses the teal sky above the ridge.
About the artwork
A painterly illustration with strong ridge-line detail: each cone is drawn with fine vertical erosion channels and layered strata rather than flat silhouettes. The palette runs bone white and pale sand through apricot, ochre and a deep rust in the capstone, with blue-green junipers and lavender shadow in the gullies. The sky is a saturated teal, and the cumulus on the left catches warm apricot light. Set in white capitals at the base across three lines: KASHA-KATUWE, TENT ROCKS, NEW MEXICO. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- Kasha-Katuwe means white cliffs — the name comes from the Keresan language of the Pueblo de Cochiti, whose land the monument sits on.
- Geology you can read — the cones are volcanic ash and pumice from the Jemez eruptions, and the print keeps the banding and the boulder caps visible.
- Desert palette without the cliche — bone, apricot and teal instead of the usual orange-and-blue southwest treatment.
- A record of a place that is not always open — access has been closed for long stretches, so this reads as a keepsake rather than an invitation.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4-A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Visiting
Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument stands on Pueblo de Cochiti land and is co-managed with the Bureau of Land Management. The Pueblo closed it for several years, and reopening has been partial and conditional, with limited days and advance reservations. Anyone planning to go should check the current status directly with the Pueblo de Cochiti and the BLM Rio Puerco field office first, and follow whatever access rules the Pueblo has set.
Styling it at home
Bone and apricot sit comfortably on warm white, clay or pale terracotta walls, and the teal sky gives a room with blue textiles something to answer. A natural oak frame suits the sand tones, as in the stone-topped table in the photographs above. Against a darker wall, the white floating frame lifts the pale rock forward.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? The erosion detail in the cones holds up best at 24" x 36" and above. In a smaller room, 16" x 24" keeps the shapes legible without dominating.
Does it come framed? Paper and matte canvas ship unframed. The framed canvas option arrives in a solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
What does the poster say? Three lines of lettering: KASHA-KATUWE on the first, TENT ROCKS on the second and NEW MEXICO on the third. The words National Monument do not appear on the artwork.
How is this different from the other New Mexico prints? This one is the banded cone hoodoos of the Jemez ash beds. The shop's other New Mexico prints cover the badlands hoodoos of Bisti and Ah-Shi-Sle-Pah, the volcanic boulders at City of Rocks, and the towns of Taos, Santa Fe and Albuquerque.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.
