A black and white Great Wave print for an office or living room that wants drama without color. A huge wave swirls under a black sky, its foam drawn in fine detail, and a single red seal stands at the side. It feels serious, focused and very graphic.
About the artwork
The wave is black and white throughout, set against a black sky so the curling crest and detailed foam read in bright white. A white border surrounds the image, and a vertical red seal on the right side is the only color on the sheet. The lettering reads THE GREAT WAVE and KATSUSHIKA HOKUSAI, naming the artist whose The Great Wave off Kanagawa, made around 1831, inspired this new woodblock-style design. Portrait.
Why you'll love it
- Foam you can study. The spray along the crest is drawn in fine detail, which rewards a close look from a desk chair.
- A black sky. The dark sky pushes the white foam forward, so the wave reads clearly from across the room.
- One red accent. The vertical red seal is the only color, a small warm mark that keeps the black and white from feeling cold.
- The reference is named. THE GREAT WAVE and KATSUSHIKA HOKUSAI are lettered on the sheet, so the source of inspiration is clear to anyone who asks.
- Made to order. Printed after you buy, colour-managed, never warehoused.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Thirteen sizes in all: 8" x 12" through 30" x 40", plus A4–A1.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang. 12" x 16" to 30" x 40".
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural. 12" x 16" to 30" x 40".
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
Put it behind a desk in a home office with white or warm gray walls and a dark wood or black desk. In a living room it holds its own above a black leather sofa or a low media console. Choose 18" x 24" for an office wall and 24" x 36" over a sofa. A black or espresso solid wood floating frame suits the dark sky. Pair it with a small red accent nearby, such as a lacquer tray or a red-spined book, to answer the seal.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
Is this a copy of Hokusai's Great Wave? No. It is a new black and white design inspired by Hokusai's The Great Wave off Kanagawa, made around 1831, with its own black sky and red seal.
Which size suits a desk wall? 18" x 24" sits comfortably above most desks. If the desk is wide or the ceiling high, 24" x 36" gives the wave more presence.
What is the red mark on the right? It is a vertical red seal, a decorative accent and the only spot of color in the design. It keeps the black and white from feeling flat.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick 200 gsm archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.
