A Glenfinnan Viaduct poster looking up the glen from the burn: the long curved viaduct striding across on tall arches, a black steam locomotive halfway over with maroon carriages behind it, and purple heather running down both banks to the water.
About the artwork
The viaduct is drawn as an engineer would want it — the curve of the deck read against the mountainside, each pier tapering, and the tall arches carrying dark cross-braced shadow inside them where the light does not reach. On top, the locomotive is small but complete: boiler, funnel, cab, and a white plume that piles up into cumulus and drifts right across the slope. The carriages behind are deep maroon with a pale window band and a green-roofed one at the tail. Below the arches the glen falls away in flat green planes, a burn threading down the centre over cream boulders into shallow turquoise pools, and both banks are dense with magenta and violet heather painted in small dabs over the grass. Distant ridges soften to blue-grey at the top left. Title in wide-tracked uppercase with Scotland beneath. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- The train is actually there. Locomotive, steam and maroon carriages, not an empty bridge.
- Heather in full colour. Magenta against deep green, which is what makes this print carry across a room.
- Two subjects in one frame. Engineering above, wild glen below, joined by the burn.
- Made to order. Printed after you buy, colour-managed, never warehoused.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4–A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
Green and purple is a bolder pairing than most travel prints offer, so give it a calm background: chalk white, warm stone or a soft olive wall. It looks right with oak, wool and worn leather, and it is a good choice for a hallway, a boy's room or a study where a railway subject fits the rest of the shelf. Natural oak keeps it soft; black makes the viaduct graphic. Hang it near the store's other Highland prints.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? Above a console or desk, 12" x 18" or 16" x 24". Above a sofa, bed or mantel, go 24" x 36" or larger so the print holds the wall.
Does it come framed? Paper prints ship unframed and fit standard frames. Choose a framed canvas if you would rather skip the framing shop.
Which direction is the train going? It is crossing left to right on the curve, with the steam blowing back over the arches it has already passed.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Materials
Three ways to print it.
Same artwork, same colour-managed printing — the material decides how it hangs and how much wall it holds.
Fine art paper
Thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks.
- The most affordable option, and the one to pick if you already own a frame.
- Reads slightly softer than canvas.
- Ships rolled in a rigid tube.
Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.
- No glass, so no glare — good for bright rooms.
- Holds a touch more contrast than paper.
- Boxed with corner guards.
Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
- White and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
- The usual choice for a feature wall — nothing to assemble.
