A Convict Lake California poster looking up the lake toward the pale, gullied face of the Mount Morrison and Laurel Mountain wall in the Eastern Sierra. The water is still enough to hold the whole ridge upside down, a small rowboat sits out in the middle, and a second boat is pulled up on the stony right-hand shore among autumn willows.
About the artwork
A detailed painterly illustration, not a flat vector graphic — the ridge is carved with dozens of separate chutes and shadow lines, and the reflection is drawn as its own soft-edged version rather than a mirror copy. The mountains read in bone, oyster and warm grey with a violet-blue in the shaded gullies; the lake goes from pale steel near the far shore to deep petrol blue in the foreground. Around it sit dark Jeffrey pines, ochre grass and a foreground bank of rust, brick and gold autumn brush. A single cumulus cloud stack rises at the upper left against a strong blue sky. In white capitals at the base: CONVICT LAKE, with CALIFORNIA below. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- The reflection is the subject — roughly half the print is the inverted mountain, which is what people actually remember about this lake.
- Autumn colour with cold water — rust and gold brush against petrol blue, a combination that carries a room without extra accent pieces.
- Eastern Sierra, not Yosemite — the pale metamorphic rock here looks nothing like Sierra granite, and the print keeps that difference.
- Two small boats — the only human trace in the scene, and they set the scale of the ridge behind.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4-A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
The deep blue takes up most of the lower half, so this print stands out cleanly on a warm white or a pale clay wall and looks especially good on soft grey-blue. Natural oak framing brings the ochre and rust forward, as in the room photographs above; white framing keeps the emphasis on the water. Good over a bed or a desk, and it sits well beside walnut and brass rather than chrome.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? The ridge detail and the small boats come alive from 18" x 27" upward. Above a sofa or bed, 24" x 36" or 30" x 40" suits the horizontal sweep of the mountain. In a study or hallway, 12" x 18" works.
Does it come framed? Paper prints and matte canvas ship unframed. Framed canvas is a separate material option with a solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
Where exactly is this? Convict Lake sits in the Eastern Sierra just south of Mammoth Lakes, off Highway 395, at about 7,850 feet. The peaks in the print are the Mount Morrison and Laurel Mountain wall on the far side of the basin.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

- Reads slightly softer than canvas.

Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.
- No glass, so no glare — good for bright rooms.
- Holds a touch more contrast than paper.
- Boxed with corner guards.
Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
- White and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
