A cologne travel poster seen from the far bank at the end of the day: the cathedral's twin openwork spires standing against a flat cyan sky, the steel arch of the railway bridge coming in from the right, and the Rhine running dark and glinting across the bottom of the frame.
About the artwork
Three colours do all the work here — a flat cyan sky, slate blue-green for stone and steel, and a warm gold wherever light catches. The cathedral is treated as a silhouette with the tracery left open, so you can see through it: each spire a lattice of gables, crockets and pinnacles, the nave roof ridged between them, the flying buttresses stepping along the flank and the small spire over the crossing. To the right the bridge is a pale steel bow, drawn strut by strut with its cross-bracing intact, its deck carried on a squared granite pier that stands in the water. Between them a low embankment wall, a handful of small roofs, bare trees and a few lit windows keep the scale honest. The river takes the bottom third, built from short choppy strokes of dark blue with gold on the crests. Title in wide-tracked uppercase reading COLOGNE, with Germany beneath. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- Open tracery. The spires are drawn as lattice rather than solid mass, which is what makes them read as gothic.
- Steel against stone. A modern bridge arch set beside a medieval facade, in the same colour.
- A cool, near-duotone palette. Cyan and slate with gold accents, restrained enough for any room.
- Made to order. Printed after you buy, colour-managed, never warehoused.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4–A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
Cool and graphic, and it holds its own in a modern room. Try it on white, pale grey or deep charcoal walls, beside black metal, smoked glass and mid-century wood. Because the palette is so tight it also works in a group of blue-toned prints without clashing. Black frames suit the steelwork; white frames let the cyan stay bright. It pairs well with the Antwerp station print or the Cochem castle print for a Rhineland and Low Countries wall.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? Above a console or desk, 12" x 18" or 16" x 24". Above a sofa, bed or mantel, go 24" x 36" or larger so the print holds the wall.
Does it come framed? Paper prints ship unframed and fit standard frames. Choose a framed canvas if you would rather skip the framing shop.
Is the whole cathedral in frame? Almost all of it — both spires, the nave roof and the long north flank. The design crops just below the terrace so the river keeps its share of the picture.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Three ways to print it.
Same artwork, same colour-managed printing — the material decides how it hangs and how much wall it holds.

Thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks.
- The most affordable option, and the one to pick if you already own a frame.
- Reads slightly softer than canvas.
- Ships rolled in a rigid tube.
Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.
- No glass, so no glare — good for bright rooms.
- Holds a touch more contrast than paper.
- Boxed with corner guards.
Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
- White and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
- The usual choice for a feature wall — nothing to assemble.
