A Coimbra travel poster from the far bank of the river: the old city packed onto its hill in white walls and orange tile, the university buildings and clock tower along the skyline, and a wide sheet of blue water in front of it all.
About the artwork
The lower half is river and the artist has let it stay river: horizontal linework in six or seven blues, from steel at the bottom edge to a lighter band near the quay, scattered with short gold flecks where the sun catches the ripple. Above the waterline a cream embankment wall runs the full width of the print, with trees and low buildings along it and a rocky breakwater at the right. Then the hill, which is where the detail lives. House after house in white and pale cream, each with a bright orange pantile roof, stacked so tightly that the streets between them barely show. At the crown sit the university buildings, a long pale facade with a pedimented centre, a square clock tower beside it, and a red and white building to the right. The sky is one flat mid-blue with no cloud at all. Title in wide-tracked uppercase with Portugal beneath. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- Orange roofs by the hundred. The hill drawn house by house rather than massed into blocks.
- Half the print is water. Banded blue linework with gold sparkle, calm under a busy skyline.
- A skyline with a tower. The university buildings give the hill one clear high point.
- Made to order. Printed after you buy, colour-managed, never warehoused.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4–A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
Blue and orange in roughly equal measure, so it lifts a plain room without needing anything else on the wall. It looks well on white, pale grey and soft green, and on a deep teal wall the roofs glow. Natural oak and light ash frames echo the warm tiles, while black frames make the water read colder and more graphic. It suits mid-century wood, cane and simple ceramics. Hang it with the Benagil Cave print for a Portuguese pair, one city and one coast.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? Above a console or desk, 12" x 18" or 16" x 24". Above a sofa, bed or mantel, go 24" x 36" or larger so the print holds the wall.
Does it come framed? Paper prints ship unframed and fit standard frames. Choose a framed canvas if you would rather skip the framing shop.
What is the building at the top of the hill? The university complex on the crown of the hill, with its clock tower standing clear of the rooftops around it.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Materials
Three ways to print it.
Same artwork, same colour-managed printing — the material decides how it hangs and how much wall it holds.
Fine art paper
Thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks.
- The most affordable option, and the one to pick if you already own a frame.
- Reads slightly softer than canvas.
- Ships rolled in a rigid tube.
Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.
- No glass, so no glare — good for bright rooms.
- Holds a touch more contrast than paper.
- Boxed with corner guards.
Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
- White and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
- The usual choice for a feature wall — nothing to assemble.
