A Bergamo Citta Alta poster that climbs the hill in layers: hedge rows and vine terraces at your feet, a long crenellated stone wall above them, then the packed terracotta roofs and towers of the old upper town, with the snow line of the Alps closing the top of the sheet.
About the artwork
The composition is built as a diagonal climb from bottom left to top right, so the eye walks up the hill the way a visitor would. The foreground is the greenest part of the print — rows of clipped hedges and vines drawn as parallel ridges, each row catching light on one side and shadow on the other, with a red-tiled roof pushing in at the right edge. Above them the old defensive wall runs across the sheet in warm grey stone, complete with square merlons along the top and ivy spilling down the face, and dark cypresses standing against it like exclamation points made of shadow. The town itself is a dense mosaic of orange and rust roof planes, out of which rise several square towers: one pale and slender, one crenellated, and a taller campanile with a clock face and a green oxidised lantern on top. Behind everything the Lombard plain flattens into pale green stripes, and the mountains go blue and then white. The title reads BERGAMO in wide-tracked uppercase with Italy beneath. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- Three landscapes in one sheet. Vineyard, walled city and alpine snow stacked from bottom to top.
- Towers you can count. The clock tower, the pale tower and the crenellated block are all drawn separately.
- Green against terracotta. A colour pairing that reads from across the room and stays warm up close.
- Made to order. Printed after you buy, colour-managed, never warehoused.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4–A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
The deep hedge green makes this an easy print for a room with plants in it — a study, a garden room, a kitchen with herbs on the sill. It settles against off-white, clay and soft olive walls, and the terracotta roofs pick up unglazed pots, rattan and warm brass. Natural oak framing keeps the green fresh; walnut leans it towards the roofs and the stone. It hangs well beside another northern Italian view when you want a pair with mountains in both.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? Above a console or desk, 12" x 18" or 16" x 24". Above a sofa, bed or mantel, go 24" x 36" or larger so the print holds the wall.
Does it come framed? Paper prints ship unframed and fit standard frames. Choose a framed canvas if you would rather skip the framing shop.
Does the print say Citta Alta on it? No. The lettering on the artwork reads BERGAMO with ITALY beneath it. The upper town is what the picture shows, not what the caption says.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.
