A Bowling Ball Beach California poster taken at low tide, when the sandstone spheres are uncovered. Dozens of them sit in rough rows across the wet sand and shallow water, each one cracked into plates like a dried mud ball. A tall sea stack stands off to the left, an ochre bluff crowded with green scrub rises on the right, and headlands fade into sea mist behind.
About the artwork
Painted in layered detail rather than flat vector shapes. Every boulder is modelled separately — highlight on the crown, olive and charcoal mottling across the body, a wet reflection pooling underneath — and the cliff face is drawn in fine vertical fracture lines rather than a single block of colour. The palette runs cool against warm: turquoise and pale jade water with white foam ribbons, gold-tan sand, weathered ochre and buff sandstone in the bluff, moss and olive green on the boulders and the clifftop scrub, all under a bleached pale blue sky. The lettering sits across the bottom in white condensed capitals: BOWLING BALL BEACH, with CALIFORNIA in smaller spaced caps below. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- A tide-dependent view — the spheres only surface at low tide, so the print records something most visitors miss entirely.
- Geology you can see — the cracked plating on each concretion is drawn, not implied, and rewards a close look.
- Repetition as composition — the rows of boulders carry the eye from the front edge back to the sea stack in one clean sweep.
- Coastal without being generic — turquoise and sand, but with an unmistakable subject rather than an anonymous shoreline.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4-A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
Turquoise water and gold sand make this an easy fit on a soft white, pale grey or sand-coloured wall, and it holds its own in a bathroom or a bedroom where cooler colours are welcome. White or natural frames keep it light. The corner room with two windows in the photographs above shows how daylight brings out the jade tones in the shallows.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? The detail on the individual boulders rewards scale, so 24" x 36" or larger is worth it above a sofa or bed. For a narrow wall or a pair with another coastal print, 12" x 18" or 16" x 24" works.
Does it come framed? Paper prints ship unframed and rolled. Choose framed canvas if you want it ready to hang, in white, black, espresso or natural.
Where is this beach? Bowling Ball Beach sits on the Mendocino County coast in northern California, below Schooner Gulch. The poster names only the beach and the state.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Three ways to print it.
Same artwork, same colour-managed printing — the material decides how it hangs and how much wall it holds.

Thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks.
- The most affordable option, and the one to pick if you already own a frame.
- Reads slightly softer than canvas.
- Ships rolled in a rigid tube.
Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.
- No glass, so no glare — good for bright rooms.
- Holds a touch more contrast than paper.
- Boxed with corner guards.
Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
- White and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
- The usual choice for a feature wall — nothing to assemble.
