A Big Sur illustrated print taken from the bluff north of the creek, looking south down the coast. A concrete arch bridge spans the gorge at the left, the cliffs step away to the right in green and pale grey, and rows of turquoise surf break over a tan crescent of sand. Rust and ochre coastal scrub fills the foreground with one dark conifer breaking the line.
About the artwork
Everything here is painted rather than drawn flat. The hillsides are built from stacked strokes of moss, olive and pine; the water shifts through six or seven blues from deep navy offshore to a pale aqua in the shallows, with white foam laid on in short broken lines. The sky is a heavy slate blue with tall cream cumulus piled along the horizon, and the shadows on the bridge and cliffs are deep rather than graphic. Warm ochre and rust scrub anchors the bottom edge. The name sits at the base of the sheet: BIG SUR in bold white caps over a spaced CALIFORNIA. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- The whole drive in one frame. Bridge, headlands, beach and open Pacific all read at once, the way the coast looks from a turnout.
- Real water colour. The surf is layered aqua over navy, not a single flat blue, so it holds up at large sizes.
- Warm and cool together. Rust scrub in front, cold ocean behind, which keeps it from feeling like a plain seascape.
- A honeymoon and road trip wall. Anyone who has driven Highway 1 recognises this exact view.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4-A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
The green, slate and aqua range is easy in a bedroom with white or pale grey walls, and the rust foreground stops it going cold. It fits the linen and teak bedroom in the photographs above, and the sage-toned alcove works too. Pair it with natural oak and off-white textiles rather than anything glossy.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? The wide view rewards scale. Over a sofa or bed, 24" x 36" reads best. For a gallery wall or a narrow gap, 12" x 18" or 16" x 24" is right.
Does it come framed? Paper ships rolled and unframed. Matte canvas arrives stretched and ready to hang. Framed canvas comes in a solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
What does the poster say? BIG SUR across the bottom with CALIFORNIA set below it in spaced capitals. The bridge is not named on the sheet.
Is there another Big Sur design in this shop? Yes, and the two are easy to tell apart. The other one is flat vector: simplified shapes, even colour fields, no brushwork, and the place name printed at the top. This painted version has layered strokes, deeper shadow, far more coastline detail, and the lettering along the bottom.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.
