A Balos Lagoon poster looking down on the shallows from the cliff path: a pale pink sand bar curving out into water so clear it is drawn as a net of ripple lines, with a dry rocky cape closing the right-hand side.
About the artwork
The design is one long S-curve. The sand comes in from the bottom right, sweeps left along the water's edge and breaks off into a bar and a few loose spits, all shell pink warming to apricot where the light hits. The shallow water is the patient piece of drawing here: thousands of fine white ripple lines over aqua, tightening where the water is thinnest and opening into flat blue-green where it deepens, with dark seagrass patches upper left. Past that the open sea goes navy to a hard horizon with a low cape on it. The right side is warm rock, coral pink and grey ledges, dry scrub, one wiry bush drawn twig by twig in the corner. The palette is soft for a travel poster: pink, aqua and terracotta rather than primary colour. The title on the print reads Crete in wide-tracked uppercase with Greece beneath. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- Pink sand and aqua water. A colour pairing that is hard to find in a landscape print.
- Drawn ripple by ripple. The shallows are built from fine white lines, not a flat wash.
- A calm pastel palette. Soft enough for a bedroom, with the rock giving it weight.
- Made to order. Printed after you buy, colour-managed, never warehoused.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4–A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
Quiet and warm, which makes it a natural bedroom, nursery or bathroom print, and a good one for a wall that already has plenty going on. It suits chalk white, blush and pale sand walls, with light oak, cane and unglazed ceramic nearby. A pale oak or white frame keeps the pastels soft; black would fight them. It hangs well beside the Monemvasia print.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? Above a console or desk, 12" x 18" or 16" x 24". Above a sofa, bed or mantel, go 24" x 36" or larger so the print holds the wall.
Does it come framed? Paper prints ship unframed and fit standard frames. Choose a framed canvas if you would rather skip the framing shop.
What does the lettering on the print say? It reads Crete with Greece beneath. The printed name is the island rather than the lagoon, so the word Balos appears nowhere on the artwork.
Is this the same as the other Crete print? No. The store's other Crete design carries the same two lines of type but shows a different scene, the fishing harbour at Chania. This one is the lagoon and the sand bar.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.
