A Badlands South Dakota poster built around one big eroded butte. A jagged clay peak rises out of the grassland, its gullies cut into sharp vertical fins, with banded pink and grey-green strata layered at its base. Smaller spires run back toward the horizon on the right, tall summer cumulus stacks in the blue sky, and a foreground of bleached prairie grass and dark juniper scrub closes the bottom of the frame.
About the artwork
Painterly and heavily detailed, closer to a rendered landscape painting than a flat vector design. The colour runs through tan, apricot and rust in the sunlit rock, cool violet-grey in the shadowed gullies, and a distinct pale sage-green band in the lower clay layers, set against wheat-gold grass and a deep cobalt sky that lightens toward the horizon. Erosion is drawn line by line down the butte face, which is what gives the peak its ribbed look. Text sits at the bottom in white sans-serif capitals: BADLANDS over a letter-spaced SOUTH DAKOTA. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- One landform, drawn properly — the butte fills most of the frame instead of a generic wide vista.
- Colour that changes with the light — the apricot and sage bands warm up under lamplight and cool down in daylight.
- Neutral enough to live with — tan, grass gold and grey-green are close to furniture tones already in most rooms.
- Wide open space on a wall — the low grassland foreground gives the composition breathing room.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4-A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
Warm neutral walls — cream, greige, clay — let the tan rock and gold grass carry the room, and a natural oak or espresso frame is the safest match. On a deeper wall colour like olive or charcoal, the cobalt sky and white clouds do the lifting instead. It suits the sunlit study and stone-table settings shown in the photographs above, and pairs well with leather, rattan and unglazed ceramics.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? The gully detail on the butte rewards scale, so 24" x 36" and up is the better buy for a main wall. In a hallway or above a desk, 12" x 18" or 18" x 24" still reads clearly.
Does it come framed? Paper and matte canvas ship unframed. Framed canvas ships in a solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural, ready to hang.
What does the poster say? Just two lines in white capitals at the bottom: BADLANDS and SOUTH DAKOTA. No park designation is printed on the artwork.
Is this the national park? This design is drawn from the wider Badlands region outside the park core — the outer buttes and mixed-grass prairie rather than the main scenic loop. We list Badlands National Park scenes separately.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks.
- The most affordable option, and the one to pick if you already own a frame.
- Reads slightly softer than canvas.
- Ships rolled in a rigid tube.
Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.
- No glass, so no glare — good for bright rooms.
- Holds a touch more contrast than paper.
- Boxed with corner guards.
Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
- White and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
