An Assateague Island ponies poster looking north across the barrier island at low light. Five chestnut wild ponies graze on a bright sand bar in the middle distance, the Atlantic runs behind them as a flat band of steel blue with one white line of surf, and the whole foreground is a shallow tidal channel streaked with reflected light and long dune shadows.
About the artwork
Built from flat shapes with painterly edges, then finished with fine individual strokes for the marram grass so the dune tufts stay sharp against the water. The colour is deliberately muted: dusty slate blue sky, teal and petrol ocean, bone white sand, pale ice blue water in the channel, sage and olive beach grass, and the ponies rendered in warm chestnut and rust as the only hot colour in the frame. The title reads ASSATEAGUE ISLAND in white capitals across the sky, with MARYLAND centred underneath. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- The ponies are the point — the herd is small in the frame and rust-red against cool blue, so your eye finds it immediately.
- Quiet palette — mostly greys, blues and sand, which makes it an easy print to live with in a bedroom.
- Real barrier-island structure — tidal channel, dune line, sand bar, ocean, stacked the way the island actually reads from the marsh side.
- Two states, one island — this print is the Maryland end, where the National Seashore herd is managed.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4-A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
The dusty blues and sand tones settle into pale grey, greige and soft white rooms without adding noise. Against the terracotta wall in the photographs above, the rust of the ponies picks up the wall colour and the print stops looking cold. A white or natural oak frame suits it best; black framing weighs the soft palette down.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? The herd is small in the composition, so avoid the smallest sizes if you want to read the individual ponies. 18" x 24" and up works well; 24" x 36" over a bed shows the grass detail properly.
Does it come framed? Paper prints ship unframed. Canvas is available stretched, or in a solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
What does the poster say? ASSATEAGUE ISLAND across the top and MARYLAND below it. No other text is printed on the artwork.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Materials
Three ways to print it.
Same artwork, same colour-managed printing — the material decides how it hangs and how much wall it holds.
Fine art paper
Thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks.
- The most affordable option, and the one to pick if you already own a frame.
- Reads slightly softer than canvas.
- Ships rolled in a rigid tube.
Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.
- No glass, so no glare — good for bright rooms.
- Holds a touch more contrast than paper.
- Boxed with corner guards.
Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
- White and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
- The usual choice for a feature wall — nothing to assemble.
