An Apostle Islands ice caves poster that looks out from inside a frozen Lake Superior sea cave. A curtain of long icicles hangs from the rust-red sandstone ceiling, framing a view of snow-capped cliffs, a stand of dark spruce and a wide teal lake. Ice sheets skirt the shoreline below, and a tall cumulus cloud sits on the horizon under a clear winter sky.
About the artwork
A painterly, densely detailed illustration rather than a flat vector design. The palette runs from brick and terracotta red in the layered sandstone to pale cream ice, deep spruce green, and two distinct blues: a warm teal sky and a colder steel-blue lake. Fine vertical strokes give the icicles weight, and the cliff faces carry visible bedding lines and shadow cracks. Type is set at the bottom in clean white sans-serif capitals, stacked as ICE CAVES over APOSTLE ISLANDS over a letter-spaced WISCONSIN. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- A view most people never get — the caves are only reachable when the lake ice is thick and safe, which does not happen every winter.
- Red against blue — warm sandstone plays off cold lake water, so the print carries colour without shouting.
- Reads from across the room — the icicle curtain gives a strong silhouette that holds up at small sizes.
- Winter without kitsch — a cold-weather scene with no snowmen, no holiday cues, hangs year-round.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4-A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
The terracotta and cream in the rock sit easily on warm white, oatmeal or clay-coloured walls, and an oak or natural wood frame picks up the sandstone tones. Against a cooler grey or slate wall the teal lake takes over instead and the print reads sharper. It works well in the plant-filled living rooms shown in the photographs above, or over a bed where the cool blue half of the palette does the calming.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? Over a sofa or bed, 24" x 36" or larger keeps the icicle detail legible. For a gallery wall, a hallway or a desk, 12" x 18" or 16" x 24" is the easier fit.
Does it come framed? Paper and matte canvas ship unframed. Framed canvas ships in a solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural, wired and ready to hang.
What does the poster say? The printed text reads ICE CAVES, then APOSTLE ISLANDS, then WISCONSIN, in white capitals across the lower third.
Is this the same as your other Apostle Islands print? No. We also sell a separate Apostle Islands sea caves design showing the same shoreline in open water. This one is the winter ice caves scene, with icicles and frozen lake edge.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.
