An illustrated Ah-Shi-Sle-Pah Wilderness poster set at the moment night takes the badlands. Mushroom-capped hoodoos stand across the frame, rust-orange caprock balanced on pale fluted pedestals of soft clay. A shooting star cuts the upper sky, a juniper leans in from the left, and the last daylight and cumulus hold on at the right horizon above a run of banded cliffs.
About the artwork
A densely illustrated, painted treatment with fine linework in the eroded rock rather than flat vector shapes. The palette splits cleanly: midnight and slate blue in the star field, burnt orange and terracotta in the caprock, bone white and warm grey in the columns, then sage, dusty red and pale blue in the low desert scrub across the foreground. Erosion runnels are drawn stroke by stroke down each pedestal. The title is printed at the bottom in white capitals over three lines, AH-SHI-SLE-PAH, WILDERNESS, then NEW MEXICO. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- A landscape almost nobody has on their wall. Ah-Shi-Sle-Pah is a roadless BLM wilderness study area in the San Juan Basin, reached on foot with no marked trail.
- Night and day in one frame. The star field on the left and the lit clouds on the right give the print unusual depth for a desert scene.
- Colour that suits warm interiors. Terracotta and bone against deep blue works with leather, brass and clay-toned walls.
- Geology worth explaining. The caps are hard sandstone protecting the soft mudstone beneath, which is exactly why the pedestals are thin and the tops are wide.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4-A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
The dark sky gives this print more weight than most desert art, so it anchors a wall on its own. Terracotta and clay walls pull the caprock forward; a deep navy or charcoal room lets the star field disappear into the paint and leaves the hoodoos floating. It sits well in a study or reading corner — the stone table setting with the mushroom lamp shown above is close to its natural habitat. Black frame for the graphic edge, espresso for warmth.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? The fine erosion detail rewards size. 18" x 24" and up is best; at 24" x 36" the individual runnels in the pedestals stay readable. Below 12" x 18" the foreground scrub starts to merge.
Does it come framed? Paper and matte canvas ship unframed. Framed canvas comes in a solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural, ready to hang.
What does the poster say? The text reads AH-SHI-SLE-PAH on the first line, WILDERNESS on the second and NEW MEXICO underneath, all in white capitals.
How do you say the name? Roughly ah-shih-slay-pah. It is a Navajo place name, and the area is often grouped with the nearby Bisti badlands south of Farmington in northwest New Mexico.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Three ways to print it.
Same artwork, same colour-managed printing — the material decides how it hangs and how much wall it holds.
Fine art paper
Thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks.
- The most affordable option, and the one to pick if you already own a frame.
- Reads slightly softer than canvas.
- Ships rolled in a rigid tube.
Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.
- No glass, so no glare — good for bright rooms.
- Holds a touch more contrast than paper.
- Boxed with corner guards.
Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
- White and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
- The usual choice for a feature wall — nothing to assemble.
