This Wai-O-Tapu Rotorua poster looks down a geothermal basin where a wide steaming pool meets a rim of vivid orange and acid-green mineral crust. Chalk-white sinter terraces crack and fold across the foreground, steam drifts along the water, and a wall of dark native bush closes the far shore under a clear sky.
About the artwork
The design is a flat vector travel-poster illustration, layering broad blocks of colour with fine cracked linework across the silica crust. The palette is unusually bold for a landscape print: a cool grey-teal pool, a burning orange band fading through chartreuse into moss green, chalk white terraces tinted with pale blue shadow, and deep bottle-green forest above. Ochre and olive scrub fills the lower corners. Type sits at the top of the frame, reading ROTORUA above NEW ZEALAND in spaced sans-serif capitals set against the pale sky. A thin white margin runs around all four sides. Portrait, 2:3.
Why you'll love it
- Colour you rarely see in landscape art. The orange-to-green mineral rim gives this print a natural accent stripe that behaves like a piece of abstract art from a distance.
- Real texture in the foreground. The cracked white sinter crust is drawn with individual fissures, so the bottom third holds up under close viewing.
- Steam as part of the composition. Soft pale drifts across the pool break the hard colour bands and keep the image from feeling graphic-flat.
- Named without clutter. Two lines of type identify Rotorua and leave the rest of the frame to the landscape.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4–A1 for European frames.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
The orange band is strong enough to lead a room, so give it a quiet ground: warm white, oatmeal, clay or a deep forest green all let it sing. Natural oak and pale ash frames pick up the ochre scrub; espresso wood grounds the darker bush. It works well in a dining room over a timber table, in a kitchen nook, or in an entryway where terracotta pots, jute and unglazed ceramics repeat the mineral tones. Avoid competing with other high-chroma prints nearby.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What size should I get? The cracked terrace detail rewards scale, so 24" x 36" or 30" x 40" is ideal above a sofa or sideboard. For a hallway or narrow wall, 18" x 24" works. A4 and A3 suit desks and shelves.
Does it come framed? Paper and matte canvas arrive unframed. Framed canvas ships in a solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
Is the orange really that intense? Yes, the illustration keeps the mineral rim at full saturation. On matte canvas it reads slightly softer than on paper, which is worth knowing if you want the colour dialled down.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick 200 gsm archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.
