This Roanoke watercolor print looks down from the Mill Mountain Star Overlook, with the Roanoke Star on the left and downtown Roanoke spread across the valley below. It is an artistic, watercolor-style interpretation of Roanoke, not an exact view of the city.
About the artwork
The star and its steel frame are drawn in fine gray ink, with the star itself left as white paper. Treetops in green and gold are washed in wet, the far mountains are built from layers of blue, and the left and lower edges blend pink, violet and blue with a long drip at the lower left and splatter around a white paper border. The star rises into the upper third from the left foreground above a curved stone wall where visitors gather, while the Taubman Museum of Art and its angular glass roof sit center right. A rail yard full of freight trains fills the middle ground on the right, and layered green mountains ring the valley in early summer. "ROANOKE" is set in spaced navy capitals across the top.
Why you'll love it
- A view from above. The high viewpoint takes in the whole valley, from the star to the far ridges.
- Rail yard below. A long coal train, signal masts and freight cars add Roanoke's railroad character.
- Angular museum roof. The Taubman Museum's sharp glass roof stands out among brick downtown buildings.
- Made to order. Printed after you buy, colour-managed, never warehoused.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Thirteen sizes in all: 8" x 12" through 30" x 40", plus A4–A1.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang. 12" x 16" to 30" x 40".
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural. 12" x 16" to 30" x 40".
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
Layered greens, mountain blues and crisp white suit an office, a hallway or a family room with wood and stone textures. It is a good gift for a train lover, a Roanoke native or someone who has driven up Mill Mountain at night.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
Is this an exact view of Roanoke? No. It is an artistic interpretation of Roanoke from the overlook, so the city, rail yard and mountains are arranged for the painting rather than mapped exactly.
What text is printed on it? Only the city name, "ROANOKE," set in spaced navy capitals across the top. There is no other lettering on the print.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick 200 gsm archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Materials
Three ways to print it.
Same artwork, same colour-managed printing — the material decides how it hangs and how much wall it holds.
Fine art paper
Thick 200 gsm archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks.
- The most affordable option, and the one to pick if you already own a frame.
- Reads slightly softer than canvas.
- Ships rolled in a rigid tube.
Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.
- No glass, so no glare — good for bright rooms.
- Holds a touch more contrast than paper.
- Boxed with corner guards.
Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
- White and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
- The usual choice for a feature wall — nothing to assemble.
