This Starved Rock watercolor print shows the flat-topped sandstone butte of Starved Rock rising above the Illinois River in winter, seen from the Lover's Leap overlook. It is an artistic, watercolor-style interpretation of the river bluffs, not an exact view.
About the artwork
Fine brown ink traces the sandstone layers, the wooden railing and the gates of the dam. Snow is left as white paper on ledges, treetops and a small island, the river is washed in blue, and bare branches are drawn in thin lines. The butte stands left of center with oaks and cedars on top, seen looking upstream from the bluffs. On the right the wide river passes Starved Rock Lock and Dam, where barges move through, and flat Illinois farmland fills the background. Snowy ledges, bare oak branches and the railing frame the foreground, and purple, blue and orange drips run from the lower left corner. "STARVED ROCK" is set in spaced navy capitals across the top.
Why you'll love it
- Bald eagles. Two bald eagles soar over the wide river.
- Barges at the lock. A towboat pushes barges through the lock while hikers in winter coats watch from the railing.
- Crisp winter palette. River blue, snow white and tan sandstone are warmed by pine green and red-brown branches.
- Made to order. Printed after you buy, colour-managed, never warehoused.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Thirteen sizes in all: 8" x 12" through 30" x 40", plus A4–A1.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang. 12" x 16" to 30" x 40".
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural. 12" x 16" to 30" x 40".
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
The cool blues and whites suit a winter-cozy living room, a lodge-style den or a hallway with grey walls. It is a good gift for an Illinois native or someone who hikes Starved Rock in every season.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
Is this an exact view of Starved Rock? No. It is an artistic interpretation of Starved Rock and the Illinois River, painted in watercolor and ink rather than as an exact view.
What text is printed on it? Only the name "STARVED ROCK," set in spaced navy capitals across the top. There is no other lettering on the print.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick 200 gsm archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Materials
Three ways to print it.
Same artwork, same colour-managed printing — the material decides how it hangs and how much wall it holds.
Fine art paper
Thick 200 gsm archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks.
- The most affordable option, and the one to pick if you already own a frame.
- Reads slightly softer than canvas.
- Ships rolled in a rigid tube.
Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.
- No glass, so no glare — good for bright rooms.
- Holds a touch more contrast than paper.
- Boxed with corner guards.
Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
- White and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
- The usual choice for a feature wall — nothing to assemble.
