This Matera watercolor print shows the cave houses of the Sassi di Matera stepping down to the Gravina ravine, crowned by Matera Cathedral and its square bell tower. It is an artistic, watercolor-style interpretation of Matera, not an exact view of the city.
About the artwork
Densely packed limestone houses are outlined in thin brown ink over beige washes, and the ravine walls are gray with violet shadows. Autumn shrubs are dabbed in orange-red and olive, the stream at the bottom is a thin line of blue, and the left edge bleeds orange and violet with long drips. Biscuit-beige stone leads the palette with olive green and rock gray, plus accents of orange-red leaves and dusty pink at the edges. The cathedral stands right of center at the top of the town, the Sassi tumble down to the ravine in the middle, and the foreground shows the edge of the Murgia plateau with a rock church carved into the stone. Late autumn light falls over the distant hills. "MATERA" is set in spaced navy capitals across the top.
Why you'll love it
- Carved rock church. A small church cut into the cliff has a cross carved above its door.
- Hikers and goats. Two walkers follow a stone path while two goats graze nearby.
- Layered stone city. Tier after tier of cave houses is drawn in fine, patient linework.
- Made to order. Printed after you buy, colour-managed, never warehoused.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Thirteen sizes in all: 8" x 12" through 30" x 40", plus A4–A1.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang. 12" x 16" to 30" x 40".
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural. 12" x 16" to 30" x 40".
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
Warm beige, olive and rust suit a living room, a study or a hallway with earthy, natural textures. It is a fitting gift for a photographer, a hiker or anyone drawn to ancient stone towns.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
Is this an exact view of Matera? No. This is an artistic interpretation of Matera that combines the town, the ravine and the plateau into one watercolor-style view.
What text is printed on it? Only the city name, "MATERA," set in spaced navy capitals across the top. There is no other lettering on the print.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick 200 gsm archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Materials
Three ways to print it.
Same artwork, same colour-managed printing — the material decides how it hangs and how much wall it holds.
Fine art paper
Thick 200 gsm archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks.
- The most affordable option, and the one to pick if you already own a frame.
- Reads slightly softer than canvas.
- Ships rolled in a rigid tube.
Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.
- No glass, so no glare — good for bright rooms.
- Holds a touch more contrast than paper.
- Boxed with corner guards.
Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
- White and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
- The usual choice for a feature wall — nothing to assemble.
