Western Gift Ideas: Cowboy and Ranch Wall Art for Country Lovers

Western gift ideas: the Howdy Block Letter print in a walnut frame above a cognac leather sofa, cream slab capitals on a brown banner

Last updated September 23, 2026

The western gift ideas that get kept are the specific ones: a rodeo ticket for the person who goes every July, a saddled horse for the rider, a collie in a too-big hat for the dog person. Below are 24 engraved-style western prints from $26, sorted by who they are for, with the size and finish to give for a cabin, a ranch house or a city apartment.

Why a print is the western gift that stays on the wall

Most western gifts are things: a belt buckle, a hat, a bottle with a horse on the label. They get worn once or finished. A print is the one western gift that goes up on a wall and stays there, and the reason this series works as a gift is that it looks like something old. Every design is drawn in engraved sepia line, the way a nineteenth-century mail-order catalogue was printed, on cream paper with one flat second colour at most. It reads as found, not bought, which is the difference between a print someone keeps and one they tire of.

The one we send when we do not know the person: a ranch hand, a dog at his heel and a flat gold sun, in oak above a tan leather sofa. Cowboy and His Dog Print — from $26 →

The look is not invented. The Library of Congress holds more than 1,500 photographs by Erwin E. Smith of ranch life and wild west shows in the Southwest, taken between 1905 and 1912, and the engraved catalogue style of these prints comes from the same decades (Library of Congress, Erwin E. Smith photographs). Choose from the western wall art series and you are giving a picture of that period, not a cartoon of it.

Price is the other argument. A paper print at 12" x 18" is $33; a ready-to-hang framed canvas at 12" x 16" is $108 in natural, espresso, black or white. Both sit inside what people spend on a western gift, and both look like more than they cost on a wood-panelled wall. If the occasion is a new ranch house rather than a birthday, our housewarming wall art gift guide uses the same two sizes. Two examples at that price: the Cowboy Boots Print, a pair of stitched boots propped against each other, cut as one solid-brown silhouette with stars and lightning bolts knocked out in cream, no outline and no shading; and the Old Cowboy Portrait Print, the only close portrait in the series, a bearded cowboy in a star-banded hat filling a franked beige postage stamp, crow's feet and the shadow under the brim drawn in.

Match the print to the person

Twenty-four prints, seven kinds of person. If you know one thing about them, this table is enough to pick from; every print starts at $26 on paper, with matte canvas and framed canvas as the step-ups.

The person The print Size to give Finish Paper from

Two things the table assumes: that a vertical 12" x 18" print fits almost any wall (a hallway, a cabin bedroom, the wall beside a desk), and that the person owns at least one piece of wood furniture, because every mockup in this guide is in oak or walnut and that is where these engravings look right. If you know the room, the cabin wall art collection sorts the same prints by where they hang. If the cabin owner hikes, the park posters in our national park gifts for hikers guide hang beside these engravings on the same oak.

24 western prints, sorted by who they are for

Each description is of the artwork itself, so you know what you are sending. All are made to order on archival matte paper and share one palette and one paper, which matters for the set idea further down. Six are drawn wide, as landscapes, and are marked horizontal.

For the rodeo fan

  1. Rodeo Ticket Print — Three admission stubs stacked one above the other, each lettered RODEO and numbered 552142 down both edges, solid brown on cream. The same serial on every stub means somebody bought three, for three people: the print for the friend who organises the trip. Paper from $26; 12" x 18" $33.
  2. Bronco Rider Ace Card Print — A bucking bronco and its rider engraved at the centre of an ace, the cream card floating on deep brown with a small longhorn skull in place of the pip. The rounded corners give the horse a box to break out of, so the movement reads hard even at 8" x 12". For a den or a home bar.

The rodeo pair on a tack-room wall: a rope-script Yeehaw cowgirl beside the bronco on an ace, in matching oak above the boots and the saddle they belong with. Yeehaw Cowgirl Print — from $26 → · Bronco Rider Ace Card Print — from $26 →
  1. Yeehaw Cowgirl Print — The word Yeehaw lettered in twisted rope script above a cowgirl riding with a lasso, cream on deep brown. Each stroke is drawn as rope, fibre lay visible and ends frayed, so she is holding the thing the title is written in.
  2. Cowgirl on a Galloping Horse Print — A cowgirl at full gallop, lasso swinging overhead, a flat rust sun disc behind her, engraved sepia on cream. The rust disc sits lower and cooler than the gold used elsewhere, so this is late light, and the rope is drawn in front of the sun where they cross.
  3. Bronco Riders Film Strip Print (horizontal) — Three bucking bronco riders, each boxed in its own square, running left to right across a fine cream pinstripe. Same rider, same horse, but the buck rises, peaks and comes down across the row: three in a row is a sequence.

For the horse person

  1. Saddled Horse Print — A saddled quarter horse standing square and waiting, engraved in sepia line inside a cream oval on a soft taupe gingham check. Reins loose, head level, tack still on: most horse prints sell the gallop, this one sells the pause before it. The oval has no outline, so it reads closer to a sampler than a poster.
  2. Lucky Horseshoe Stamp Print — A gold shoe with a single star at its crown, on a beige postage stamp franked with a circular postmark, laid over a cream and grey ticking stripe. The shoe is open end up, the way the superstition insists, which a rider will check first. Small in scale, so it holds up at A4 beside a tack-room door.

  1. Resting Horse Stamp Print — A horse standing quietly with a rope circle still hanging in the air above it, inside a beige postage stamp on a cream and grey stripe. Head level, weight even, no rider: the calmest animal in the series, so it suits a child's room better than the rodeo prints.
  2. Western Saddle Oval Print — A tooled leather saddle inside an olive oval cameo on a warm, textured tan ground. The tooling on the skirt and fender is drawn stamp by stamp, and the olive oval is the only green in the whole western series; against the tan it reads like a leather dye.

For the ranch kid, the nursery and the new baby

  1. Collie in a Cowboy Hat Print — A collie shown head and shoulders under a wide felt brim two sizes too big for him, engraved in sepia line on cream. The drawing does not wink: a serious nineteenth-century portrait, correct anatomy, cross-hatched coat, collar buckle picked out, the hat drawn to the same standard. Nothing is cartooned, so it survives from nursery to teenage bedroom.
  2. Howdy Honey Print — Two words, HOWDY large and HONEY smaller beneath it, in western slab caps inside a hand-drawn dashed rectangle, brown on cream linen. The dashes vary in length and the corners do not quite meet, which is why it reads as warm rather than as signage. Legible from a doorway at 8" x 12": the one for above a crib or a changing table.

If the nursery is for a future rider, the horse pair from the section above works there too, and it moves to a bedroom later without ever looking babyish.

For the cabin and the desert house

  1. Cowboy on a Canyon Trail Print (horizontal) — A rider waves his hat as he rides away down a canyon trail, rock walls rising on both sides, in fine sepia line on cream. Because he is heading away, the empty middle of the sheet reads as distance: the design in the series with real depth, drawn as a landscape. Sizes run 12" x 8" ($26) to 36" x 24" ($55 paper, $250 framed canvas).
  2. Cattle Drive Print (horizontal) — A ranch hand walks a herd of cattle out into desert scrub beneath a flat rust sun disc, engraved sepia on cream. The herd recedes across the width, near animals fully rendered, far ones reduced to horns and backs, the last few barely marks: it needs the run to show distance. Longhorn and desert in one print.
  3. Longhorn Skull Stamp Print — A steer skull drawn head-on with its horns sweeping the full width of a cream postage stamp, franked at one corner, on a plain cream ground. The horns are cut off by the perforated edge, so the skull feels too big for its stamp. One colour, no landscape, no lettering: the quiet longhorn.

Longhorn skull stamp print in a black frame leaning against a sage green wall
Horns cut by the edge of the stamp, in a black frame against a sage green wall: the finish for a desert house. Longhorn Skull Stamp Print — from $26 →
  1. Desert Cactus Sun Print — A cluster of saguaro, one tall and two low, drawn in fine outline with a flat rust sun dropped in behind the tallest arm, on cream linen. The sun overlaps the cactus, which gives a flat drawing depth without shading. A real saguaro does not grow its first arm until it is 60 to 75 years old and may live 150 to 175 years (National Park Service), so a tall one with two arms is the portrait of an old plant.
  2. Five Cacti Stamp Print (horizontal) — A row of five cacti inside a franked cream postage stamp on a deep rust ground. No two are the same height, and they are drawn in the hatching the series uses for people, so they read as a row of characters. The rust ground is the warmest colour in the western set, and the pale stamp glows against it.

For the one who says howdy to everyone

  1. Cowboy and His Dog Print — A ranch hand stands with his hat pushed back and a small dog at his heel, in fine sepia line, with a flat gold sun rising behind them on cream. Man and dog are drawn with the same cross-hatch and weight of line, so neither is decoration; the gold disc puts the pair in silhouette and keeps the rest of the sheet empty. If you only know that the person likes the West and likes dogs, this is the print.
  2. Howdy Block Letter Print (horizontal) — The print in the banner at the top of this page: HOWDY in outlined slab capitals, cream letters knocked out of a solid brown box on cream linen, drawn wide from the start, a fine keyline tracing each letter. Over a sofa it wants 24" x 16" or larger; in an entryway 18" x 12" ($33) is enough, because it is a greeting and the door does the rest.

Size and finish for a cabin, a ranch house or an apartment

Western prints get hung on wood, and wood is busy. The rule that makes these engravings work on a panelled or log wall is to keep the frame plain (oak, natural or espresso, no mat) and to go one size larger than you would on a white wall, because the cream paper needs to hold its own against the grain. The full measurement and hanging-height tables are in our size guide; these are the four sizes we actually give.

  1. 12" x 18" paper, $33 (30 x 46 cm): the safe vertical size for a hallway, a cabin bedroom or a home office. Every vertical print in this guide is available in it.
  2. 16" x 24" paper, $40 (41 x 61 cm): the size for a panelled living-room wall or above a cabin bed, where a 12" x 18" print starts to look like a postcard.
  3. 12" x 16" framed canvas, $108: ready to hang the day it arrives, in natural, espresso, black or white. Natural on pine, espresso on darker log walls.
  4. 24" x 16" paper, $40, or 36" x 24" framed canvas, $250: the two sizes for the horizontal prints (canyon trail, cattle drive, film strip, five cacti, Howdy banner) above a sofa or a mantel. The 36" x 24" is a commitment; give it only if you have seen the wall.

On the black frame: most of these prints are cream paper with brown or sepia line, and black sharpens them on a sage, white or plaster wall, the way the longhorn print is shown above. On a wood wall, black reads as a hole. Match the frame to the wall, not to the print.

Give a set: the whole series shares one palette

Every design in the western series was drawn on the same cream paper with the same sepia line and, at most, one flat second colour, so any two hang together without planning. That makes a pair a better western gift than one large print: it tells the person where to hang them (together, a hand-width apart, same frame) and costs less than it looks. The discount is automatic, no code. Two prints in one order take 7% off, three or more take 10% off: two 12" x 18" paper prints are $61.38 instead of $66, and three are $89.10 instead of $99.

Four pairs we know work, because the subjects answer each other:

  • The tack-room pair — the Lucky Horseshoe Stamp Print with the Saddled Horse Print: a franked stamp beside a gingham cameo, both vintage, both with a cream ground; for a rider who owns those already, the Western Saddle Oval Print with the Resting Horse Stamp Print is the quieter version.
  • The rodeo pair — the Rodeo Ticket Print with the Bronco Rider Ace Card Print: the ticket and the ride, one brown-on-cream and one cream-on-brown, from the rodeo wall art hub. If they would rather have a rider than a stub, swap the ticket for the Yeehaw Cowgirl Print, cream on the same brown as the ace.
Saddled horse print in a black frame leaning against a sage green wall
Right of the tack-room pair: the saddled horse in its gingham cameo, in a black frame against a sage green wall. Saddled Horse Print — from $26 →
  • The cowboy pair — the Cowboy and His Dog Print with the Collie in a Cowboy Hat Print: the man with his dog, and the dog in the man's hat, from the cowboy wall art hub.
  • The wide pair — the Cattle Drive Print with the Cowboy on a Canyon Trail Print: the herd going out and the rider going away, for the two long walls of a lodge living room.

Keep the frames identical and hang the pair with the centres at about 57 inches (145 cm) from the floor; the full method is in our guide to how to hang a gallery wall. For a hallway or a stair landing, go to three: add the Longhorn Skull Stamp Print to the tack-room pair and the three stamps read as one piece, $89.10 at 12" x 18" with the automatic 10% off.

Timing it for Christmas and birthdays

Every print is made to order: it is printed within 3–5 business days of the order, then shipped. Shipping is free in the US and $5 everywhere else. Allow two weeks, so for December 25 order in the first week of December, and for a birthday two weekends before. If you are cutting it closer, send paper rather than framed canvas: the tube is lighter and moves faster, and the person picks a frame that matches the wood they already have. Details on sizes, framing and how the paper ships are in the FAQ.

Our recommendations

Four more from the same series, not pictured above: a lowercase quote for the person who does not want a slogan, wildflowers for the ranch kitchen, a mallard for the cabin hallway and a wide roping scene for the long wall.

Western gift FAQ

What is a good western gift for someone who has everything?

A framed print of something specific to them: the rodeo ticket for a fan, the saddled horse for a rider, the collie in a cowboy hat for a dog person. An unframed paper print from $26 lets them choose the frame, and the whole western series shares one palette, so a second print later will match.

What size western print should I give?

12" x 18" (30 x 46 cm) is the safe size for a vertical print: it fits a hallway, a cabin bedroom or the wall beside a desk. 18" x 12" is the equivalent for the horizontal prints such as the canyon trail or the cattle drive. Go to 16" x 24" or 24" x 16" only if you know it is headed above a sofa or a bed.

Framed or unframed for a cabin?

Unframed paper is the easier gift: it ships rolled in a tube, costs from $26, and the cabin owner picks a frame that matches the wood already there. A ready-to-hang framed canvas (from $108 at 12" x 16", in natural, espresso, black or white) is the choice when you want them to hang it the day it arrives.

How long does a print take to arrive before Christmas?

Every print is made to order and printed within 3–5 business days, then shipped. Shipping is free in the US and $5 elsewhere. Allow two weeks to be comfortable, so for December 25 order in the first week of December.

Is there a discount for a set of western prints?

Yes, and it is automatic. Two prints in one order take 7% off, three or more take 10% off, with no code to enter. Two 12" x 18" paper prints come to $61.38; three come to $89.10.
